    Agreed.

Also, I hated Breath of Fire IV (haven't played V, but it's not really a traditional BoF style game from what I've seen) and FFX-2.

And as much as I loved Golden Sun I and II, I hated going FROM I to II. Oh my God that stupid password drove me insane.

Edit: There was this one RPG I played on playstation that was definetely the worse of all time. I can't remember what it was called or most of the story. I just remember that it was about this guy who found some weird pink animal (I think it was called "pig"?) that could transform and stuff. The only two playable characters in the entire game were these two, so there wasn't a lot of party switching and stuff. I wish I could remember what it was called.

Also, Chrono Cross. It wasn't bad, but I expected it to be as good as Chrono Trigger, so I was disappointed when I played it.

Alright, I forgot about SoS, definitely deserving of a spot in anyone's top 5. I actually liked it, but I was too young to know better.

Had to google it, but yeah that's the one. I remember reading reviews and wanting to try it out, but not really bothering because it looked kinda crappy.

Explain. Is story a problem or not? What make it less inspiring than the average rpg?

Dialogue made me want to sleep
Explain again. What part made you want to sleep? An exciting dialogue consist of what? Was the proportion of exciting/boring dialogue that much worse than other psx rpg you liked?

If you put some thought in your opinion, I'm sure you can answer those fine. If you prefer to call your opinion a "first impression", that's fine as well, but I find that sort of opinion shallow. I know from your previous posts that gameplay in rpg is a lot more important for you than it is for me, but even then, I can still find multiple rpg with more gameplay issue than ff8.

Quite frankly, I've seen little negative opinion about FF7-FF8 that weren't clouded by nostalgia goggle, mixed with the general hatred directed at Square (everything mainstream suck, therefore ff7/ff series suck; ff8 is not ff7, because I expected ff7-2, I will hate it right after I realize Cloud isn't there)

Lol! I was trying to figure out it's name Drakkhen was fucking awful (I was trying to find it as Drakkenfire or something...) I remember renting it then going... and actually taking it back less then an hour later since the place was down the street and exchanging it for something else.

    Huh?

I said it felt sloppy, the story didn't exactly captivate me. Not at age 10, not at age 18.

Explain again. What part made you want to sleep? An exciting dialogue consist of what? Was the proportion of exciting/boring dialogue that much worse than other psx rpg you liked?
Boring characters make for boring dialogue. It's part of the reason I find them boring. It's also part of the reason I found the story to be boring. But let's just say the story isn't the biggest reason I disliked FF8.

Sure, I could find some RPGs with worse gameplay and all that jazz, but if I haven't played them then what is the point?

I don't think you fully understand the point of this topic. To list PERSONAL games that YOU thought were bad. I think FFXII is a great game and I love the gambit system, but if someone were to list it as one of their worst RPG experiences then I wouldn't defend it to the death.

Gameplay is important in a good RPG, just as important as story. I don't know why people think it's OK to have good story but shitty sub-par gameplay, or even why people make RPGs with great gameplay and shitty stories. I like to have both, but lacking that I bought a game. A game that I expect to play, that I paid to play so if it doesn't have a good gameplay I feel cheated. If I wanted to experience a great story I'd read a fucking book. Not to say I don't appreciate a good, compelling story (I played .Hack after all), but if the gameplay is frustrating and infuriating then a great story goes to waste for me because I don't like to suffer for something I could just potentially read online and save myself the hassle.

Also, I hate any RPG that has an antagonist who does the cheesy, "HA HA HA HA HA HA I just did something naughty," laugh. Kefka was the reason FF6 gave me my worst RPG experience. I loved the game outside of that one lame-ass villain.

Note:I haven't played an RPG I didn't enjoy, I'm just listing my least favorites.

FF9-The hardest boss was linked to the worst chocobo game ever. I never had the opportunity to fight ozma, because I couldn't get through the hot & cold game.

FF10-The main character had a 10 year old voice actor. Also, the chocobo game made me restart the entire game for the main character's ultimate weapon. Loved "fat-tits" Lulu though.

FF11-I had fun with it when I played, but no challenge, too much down time, blahblah.

Baldurs Gate for the ps2-too many spiders, seriously

There are moments in life where I find it difficult to remember that other people's opinoins may simply be different from mine and that my disagreement, no matter how strong, does not make their feelings invalid.

This... this would be an extreme case of that.

    Quest 64 - Need i say more?

FFX-2 - Good gameplay, horrible storyline. Stripped everything that made FFX good and replaces it with a goth chick and bubbly girlspeak. Seriously, it was one huge fan-service/fapdisk completely devoid of anything remotely memorable. Ive seen many RPGs w/female leads, this is the bottom of the barrel - Recycled Tidus was the most hilarious thing ive ever seen in a final boss. For gods take THEY REUSED THE OVERDRIVES DOWN TO THE WIRE for shuyin.... what the fuck, they didnt even change anything.

Re: Your Top 5 (or less) Worst RPGs (and why)

This one isn't an RPG, but for those of you who played it and beat it, you will be right there with me on this one.

Kid Fucking Chameleon for the Sega Genesis. You waste so much of your life playing through that game and what happens at the end? Congratulations, bye bye. Fuck you Kid Chameleon. Fuck your couch.

    As to RPG's.

Grandia III sucked fairly bad. There was nothing redeeming to me about the game. Clunky combat system, non descript characters, lame story. You name it.

Any of the Shining Force series that were not Shining Force I, II, or III. All the others sucked so much balls it made me ashamed to have even played them.

Final Fantasy VII. Now I'm sure all of the Cloud/Sephiroth fanboys will jump on this one but I'm sorry. The game just wasn't all that good to me. I see you guys belittling the main character from FFVIII as emo etc. What the hell do you think Cloud was?

I'm the quiet guy who has a very emotional hidden past, that I don't fully remember, but I fight anyways because I carry the pain of watching my companion die while I was helpless to defend her.

Come on. The story was garbage. The main reason why everyone bought it and loved it was because it was the first Final Fantasy game released on a next gen system.

Think about it this way. If FFVII came out after say, Legend of the Dragoon or Chrono Cross, would there be as many rabid fans out there? Nope.

It was the first "real" RPG released at the time and as a result it garnered legions of fans. Despite the fact it wasn't that great a game.

FFX I liked to a certain point. It's kind of hard for me to really enjoy a game when I don't like the main character. I mean Tidus wasn't horrid. But he was definitely a poor choice as the main protagonist. I liked Yuna.

I can't really think of any other ones right now since I'm at work.

    wat?

What game were fuckin playing man?
Were you high when you played FF7?

Cloud didn't really brood over Aeris's death, there were one or two scenes, but damn, what the fuck did you expect?

Re: Your Top 5 (or less) Worst RPGs (and why)

Nerd fight! Somebody get some scotch tape, we're going to need to fix some glasses! Aaaanyways. FFX-2's battle system was the best battle system in an FF until XII, which was only somewhat hurt by the engage-and-afk gambit system and overgeneralized license board. Say what you will about the story, or the Charlie's Angels/Barbie Dress Up aspects, the system was rock solid. But this is about worst.

Ultima IX -- speaking of atrocities ending a great series; nobody expected Origin/EA to top Ultima 8 for sheer retarded gameplay, but they managed by releasing a product some developers wouldn't even put into beta. There were more holes in the game's code than in Chrono Cross' plot. The presentation of Britannia was good (the graphics were pretty well done, for the most part), but the story was just...just... argh!! GLOWY EYES, RAWR, ONE WITH THE STAAAAARRSS. They released a couple of patches which fixed SOME of the rampantly destructive bugs, but they didn't patch the story -- though apparently, some fans did. Or tried to. You know how fan efforts go.

And speaking of Chrono Cross! SO MUCH POTENTIAL. I'm not even talking from the perspective of "sequel to Chrono Trigger." Cut at least half the characters and their 10 minutes of fetch-it quests and 3 minute Level 7 Element quests, and you'd have a hell of a lot more time to, you know, actually give some real plot to the rest of the characters. There were so many potentially interesting characters, and they might as well be carbon copies of each other with different elements or weapons, as far as the story went. The dog can go. And, heavens help me, so can Pip. But then, again, the mechanics of the system were pretty solid. I liked the battle system and the element mapping, especially the Battlefield Colors. Lent an interesting strategic bent (if you make the field all White, you can summon Whossit the Holy Destroyer God, but maybe that dark creature snuck a white element up its sleeve and all it needs is a light field and boom, done).

Might & Magic 6-> -- I'm sure a great many of you never played Might & Magic, but those who have will understand this. Once JVC was off the team (and, you know, the entire rest of NWC effectively), M&M crashed and burned. Oh, 6 was okay, as something different. I did enjoy it a little. But it was certainly no Xeen, or even Isle of Terra. I tried 7, and that was the only time I actually tried to bring a game back to the store. I've read up on 8 and 9, and I'm glad I got out.

I still think that if they had switched the amount of characters with the amount of combo attack, chrono cross would be a much, much better game.

I thought Chrono Cross was better than Chrono Trigger, actually.

Given it's near-perfect reviews pretty much everywhere, I'd say a vast majority of the gaming community wouldn't find the idea too odd either.

Story was fine but it had the worst magic system known to mankind. Chrono Cross that is-

    too many underdeveloped characters too!

Underdeveloped characters are a given when the number of characters you can recruit is 10x more than the number of characters you can actually use simultaneously.

The vast majority of Suikoden characters are very well developed in comparison to the average Chrono Cross character.

The problem with Suikoden characters is you have to dig and or they were developed in a previous game.
