    Attrition calculator

Hello again -- Partywipe McNoobsauce here again with a post about a program I wrote that helps me determine how many synths yield particular odds for profit/loss margins by crafting through sheer attrition.

Screw superstition and smash things 'till you see an HQ. That's the premise on which this tool operates. So far, it's helped me out quite a bit. Maybe it'll help you out as well?

Instructions are on the page if you wanna check it out.

I used it to calculate how much money I lose daily, I like it.

    Like it.
Love knowing exactly how much I would need to HQ for profit without doing the math in my head.

Same here. It also doesn't factor in breaks ... which I seem to do a lot.

    Re: Attrition calculator

yeah, very nice tool but needs to factor in breakages and multicraft breakages, I break a lot of shit which seems to eat into any decent profits i make. Is it just me or is Scorpion Harness programmed to break more? for that tier synth i seem to break as many as I HQ

Hey what are you waiting for ?!

It's a nice tool, but it won't replace my good old Excel spreadsheet.

    Re: Attrition calculator

Thanks..I've been finding it useful myself.

Breaks...um...yeah, I suppose I could put that in...but I really wanted to avoid a preconceived notion of a base percentage for everyone. Breaks include that. Some people tend to break a lot more than others, same for tier1 tier2.

I would have to assume a base which I don't want to do, and I also wanted to avoid a web form with a ton of knobs and such, because I'm lazy and I don't want to have to stand on my head to use my own calculator. I think a "tier0" knob and a "how many subcrafts ->1? ->2?" would be a bit much - although I could be wrong.

We can kinda gauge in our heads our own fail rate and fold it into our bottom line. I appreciate the feedback and I'm glad I could finally do something useful for others.

    Re: Attrition calculator

I use a very similar thing in excel except with each individual material (so I can easily change them depending on market fluctations). I like to include a safety factor of sorts by assuming I will crit fail 10% of the synths and HQ 5%. This way, if the function still comes out as positive, it's pretty hard to lose money (in my experience, fail and HQ rates for tier 1 are about 5%).

    Re: Attrition calculator

I understand there's a lot of folks here who use excel...but being a linux nerd myself, excel and it's creepy, nebulous functions/features are something I don't wanna have to wrap my head around (can't teach an old dog new tricks I guess) so this was the simplest solution for me. Plus, it was a nice excuse to use Ruby on Rails

Put the least amount of effort into the input, nosepick your way thru results and keep a hammer a hammer lol.

I like this calculator... a lot. It may not represent anything realistic, but it helps in some manner.

I just did a sample run of 24 HQ Scorpion Harnesses using the Bismarck prices. Nice to know that if you were to synth 24 of them, you would start making a small return on your investment at about the 6th HQ synth.

    Very nice!

really useful, however it needs support for HQ1/2/3 calculations.

Not sure what he would add, it has up to 100% HQ rate.

Can't you just infer from 25%/50%?

    Re: Attrition calculator

HQ 1/2/3 changes the quantity of item's produced(for stackable synths). Just doing 25%/50% won't account for that. I'm talking about the actual HQ1/2/3 results, not crafting tiers.

Having a field for the number of item's produced by the synth for NQ/HQ123 would make this near perfect.

    hq1/2/3?

ugh...that'll be dodgy to implement..I'm not sure how I could do that while retaining ease of use...I will ponder this. I'll let you guys know if I come up with something slick.

That will cube (^3) the amount of possibilities. That's WAY too much to even attempt to implement lol. I think it's perfect the way it is and serves it's purpose perfectly.

    Re: Attrition calculator

What happened to just determining negative costs of materials, subtracting resale/desynth value of NQ, and then adding probably resale value of HQ based on probability of HQing out of X synths?

But then again, we all know that the "probability" of HQing something really means shit when you go 3/5 on a HQ one day and 0/57 the next. In the end it all works out, but you will never be able to tell "how much" youll make in any given crafting session.

As for crafting lately, whenever I feel the desire to make some gil crafting, I just throw away the gil i was going to spend and kick myself in the balls, to save time and get the same result.
