If you only have the gil to buy a couple pieces of armour I wouldn't get the SH. I just finished leveling Nin a few months ago and I found that you really don't evade exp mobs that often at all so SH just wasn't worth it. Also if you have good DD's in your party you might have a hard time keeping hate, Haub definately helps in that department. I found that TP'ing in Haub, and if there comes a time where shadow timers aren't up at 64 you get Arhat's Gi(+1) along with Arhat's Jinpachi(+1) and Jelly Ring, have a macro that throws them on along with defender and this worked best. I was able to keep hate and when I did lose shadows I didn't get hit too hard anyways. With or without a Bard I used Haub all the way, and AF sucks unless you have merits in Katana to back it up.
I used Haub most of the time after 60. The problem with eva is you need a lot of it to actually evade at a decent rate. But you just give up on a lot of DD potential at this point, and probably aren't doing a very good job at holding hate. I think I had like EVA-35 while leveling? lol. The worst was over hunting on Colibri, there's just nothing I could do to keep hate on them without spamming sushi.
If your DD's can't get hate enough to save the extra shadows that Haub would normally lose you, there's usually something wrong.
Eva is great for soloing, it is cool for an oh shit macro, but Ninja in Exp has the Gear, WS, and potential to be a DD first, and Tank as much as possible because of that.
SH won't help you hold hate as well usually as having a little more sting in every slash stab and chop of those little ginsu's you're whipping around.

Evasion+ sucks compared to Evasion Skill+. Evasion+ gear is only beneficial to a point, and the point at which more helps starts to drop off somewhat early from my experience. At this point, equipping more Evasion+ gear is a waste.
Really in a nutshell: If your evasion boost is noticeable while wearing a SH, then wear the SH for TP, and use Haub only for WS. If you don't notice a difference in evasion, wear Haub full time.
Spend a little money and get some evasion skill+ gear (evasion earring, evasion torque, melody earrings) and you won't regret it, and you can use more DD gear in your other slots instead of the nearly worthless evasion+ gear.
And of course, when you start doing TP burn parties, you really don't need to evade as much since you'll only be tanking for a short while on each mob before another DD pulls its attention. So just go with the DD gear and don't worry about your evasion.
People really are full of shit, lol. I JUST finished NIN 5 days ago and I can easily say there is a HUGE difference in Evasion between SH+1 and Hauby+1. I mean fuckton phenominal difference. I never had problems with hate leveling NIN and I was a very good DD, both with AF and with SH+1.
Personally, I stick by my advice to never use Hauby for TP unless you have another Tank or are destroying mobs in 30s or less(even then I say AF becaus eyou probably have BRD/COR). I parsed around 85-90%% Acc on most mobs with AF, Sushi really owns for Acc and when you have a BRD AF is even better. Meat just seems out of reach for NIN exp unless you have full Acc gear AND BRD or COR Acc buffs.
The reason I liked AF so much is you don't have any -Eva and can still manage shadows fine and it helps you DD. I really don't get why people can't hold hate without DDing, NIN has a fuckton of enmity gear available to them and even on mobs I whiffed on for whatever reason I still held hate very well.
5STR 5DEX 10Atk is really not going to benefit you as a NIN more then 30 Eva. The same people spouting evasion is shit are saying you need to stack it in huge quantities. Well, what's 30 Evasion? Pretty big amount imo and it is very noticable. Once you hit 75 and become purely a DD you can TP in wtfever you want, until then you are 90% of the time still trying to TANK mobs that can and will own you if you don't evade some.
edit: either everyone who is saying evasion sucks and TP in Hauby partied in perfect parties with BRDs and CORs or PLs or they probably had more problems then they are leading people to believe. The few times I tried TPing in Hauby+1 mobs almost never missed me. I had a few shitty parties(RDMs who didn't even try to enfeeble mobs) in which I needed to TP in SH+1 and some great parties I left AF on.
Hauby if you aren't a pussy.
I had to tank a lot in a Hauby, with War eva, I just kind of got used to the idea that killing faster > dodging more, a.k.a. TP burn mindset, set up melee burns from the early 20's on and off til the present. Save tanking for mobs that matter, killing faster is always better for exp.
I do agree that the AF is the best of both worlds when you can make up the acc/att elsewhere, and is what I would use if I felt Hauby would strip too many shadows, yet my DD's couldn't take some of the hate load.
+30 evasion is a lot of evasion
I just think that u'd benefit more from + attack speed, + att or + acc or + enmity for that matter.
But I have to admit- I certainly nvr messed w/ + 30 evasion - so I really am not qualified to discuss the amount exp mobs would miss u.
But I CAN say that again- I really think you'd benefit more from + attack speed of AF or + att/acc/enmity than + evasion. If you hit the mob w/ Hojo- and then slam 'em w/ a strong WS- u'll keep hate the majority of the time- unless your party isn't working well together. Keeping hate can be achieved w/ the large # of hate tools NIN/WAR has anyway (voke, hojo, etc...) and by pretty much putting out as much (and sometimes more- a good nin w/ a decent set up will out DD majority of melees-- because a lot of melees suck) DD as other melees. And to me- having the ability to gain tp 5% faster, hit the mob 5% more, and therefore ws 5% more makes the AF > pretty much anything for TP (as long as your hitting--- if your acc is ~80-85% you're golden).
BUT- hey- its all good
***About the "a lot of melees suck" comment-- A well equipped, knowledgeable sam, mnk, war will certainly out DD a similarly equipped/knowledgeable nin. Problem is a well equipped, knowledgeable player of any job is difficult to find these days in pick-up parties.
Even with no bard, Hojo + Haste is usually enough to be able to TP full time in Haubergeon (+1). If you have a bard, toss in elegy and it's a breeze to do.Originally Posted by Judai
Did you read my posts? As I quite clearly stated in my posts, I basically said use SH(+1) when you have shitty support and people said TP in Hauby no matter what because +evasion is worthless unless in huge amounts, to which I basically replied "you ppl are fcking retards".
I did read your post. I agree with you that SH +1 is good if you have shitty support a.k.a not having Haste and that people are talking too fast by saying to use it in any situation. The thing though is that your saying (what I'm getting for your post) is that evasion is absolutely necessary (using AF instead of Haubergeon +1 to negate the - evasion) for leveling whether you have support or not to which I replied my previous post.Originally Posted by Judai

Or, try to fight with mobs that fast hitting like weapons lol
Just a little nitpick, AF body gives 5% faster swings, TP gain is roughly the same as I recall, from the -delay reducing Tp/hit ever so slightly.
If you had a body piece with 5% haste at level 60, you would wear that over AF body, even before factoring in spell recasts.

No, not saying Evasion is a must, just for those sub par parties. I said I used AF merely because it has no downside, if you can find the Acc somewhere else. I just got annoyed because of people who are all, Hauby onry omg you gimps because they obviously don't have a fucking clue or partied in only extremely good parties.Originally Posted by Darkwill
The only reason I used haub+1 full time was because I geared myself to DD and had absolutely no eva gear while leveling. Never really had a problem with shadows even while being in a shitty pt. I have no idea why I even bought a sh+1 >_>Originally Posted by Judai
Depends on where it is in the delay spectrum. Example: lvl 65 nin (DW IV) with Kitsutsuki/Hototogisu, giving an extra 5% dual wield increases TP/second from 2.14 (4.56tp/2.13 sec) to 2.25 (4.5 tp/2 sec), a 5% increase in TP/sec. Too tired to do other delay examples.Just a little nitpick, AF body gives 5% faster swings, TP gain is roughly the same as I recall, from the -delay reducing Tp/hit ever so slightly.
