    Re: Cologne topic

I wear Aqua Di Gio, Abercrombie Fierce, or Envy by Gucci.

Another thing about the high end clothing stores. Most of the time I go in to try something new, they toss a spray on a small card and put it in a small brown bag and close the bag up. After about 1/2 hour of walking around the mall you pull the card out and then see if you like the fragrance.

The coffee been thing works really well too. Only a couple places around me have them available at the counter though

Green by Diesel is a very light scent that smells like woods and grass with floral undertone. =] I like using it during Spring and Summer. "Top notes of fresh aromatic ginger and lime. Middle notes are floral orange blossom, orris, carnation, rose, cinnamon and jasmin. Base notes are cedarwood, musk, amber, sandalwood and vanilla."

Paul Smith by Paul Smith. "A sharp, spicy, lavender, amber fragrance. It can be very light like Diesel Green."

Extreme by Paul Smith smells SO SO SO good. Its my main cologne and I've gone through two bottles of it so far. "It is a spicy scent, top notes of bergamot, rosemary, hesperidia, nutmeg and cardamom." I wear it all year roung but its basically a fall/winter cologne based on how it smells.

L'Eau D'Issey by Issey Miyake. Very citrusy and spicy.

Unrelated: If you're going to wear Axe, for christ's sake, please don't. Use a nice, clean-smelling shower gel and deoderant if you don't want to wear a cologne. I can tell a guy wearing Axe from across a store with my eyes closed, and trust me, my eyes are usually closed because they're watering.

Axe scents are overpowering regardless of how little you put on, and I've yet to meet someone who could manage 'little'.
100% Agree. I hate when I go to the gym and have to play basketball/work out with dudes who take mexican showers in that stuff. I was in highschool when Axe first came out, and my eyes/nose would be raped everytime I walked into the boys locker room. It's rediculous how much Axe actually smells. You never smell a "hint" of Axe, that shit either goes unnoticed or sucker punches you in the nose.

I used the axe deodorant sticks though. They do an awesome job at keeping my pits smelling nice.

The only deoderant I ever use is oldspice high endurance (or occassionally redzone). I haven't used any other type in years.

Anyone ever have the problem of needing to change their preferred deodorant after an extended amount of time, because it starts not to work as well? This usually happens to me like every two years.. fkin annoying.

    Re: Cologne topic

Those ladies (oh! sexism) behind the perfume/cologne counters are -worth- talking to. If they don't have coffee beans go somewhere else. If they can't answer your questions get someone else. You'll usually have a pick of two different kinds of people: the ones who've been recently indoctrinated by whatever line's sales rep, and the ones who actually know and can compare different products.

This probably sounds like a silly thing to be picky about, I mean this isn't purchasing a car, but your olfactory system is the MOST powerful in your repertoire. Remember what colour your gran's eyes are? No? I bet you know exactly how she smells. Having a personal, appropriate 'signature' scent is more important than I have words.

While I doubt most of you would want to track down an aromatherapist (or have a mum who's into that kind of nonsense -- I happen to), the perfume industry uses those flowers and oils to make the synthesized products you're buying.

Here are some attractive, masculine oils/scents there are very often used as the base for colognes:
Sandlewood - rich, dusty, with tones of wood
Bergamont - deep, moist, citrus without being sweet
Cedarwood - exactly what you'd think

Watch out for things like Patchouli or Musk.. a very little goes a LONG way. Once the top notes are gone you could end up smelling like a dirty hippy.

its that 1st thing you smell that goes away quickly. the alcoholy smell whatnot. where as base note is the smell that stays throughout the period wearing it and does not dissapear. middle notes are the smells you wait for while its in the bag, the ones that slowly appear as you wear it.

The compounds that contribute to top notes are strong in scent, very volatile, and evaporate quickly. Citrus and ginger scents are common top notes. Also called the head notes.

[zom edit]: Its worth browsing through that wiki and familiarizing yourself with some of the terms in the "Olfactive family", because as fruity and French-sounding as they are, these are the official classifications. Knowing what they mean, and if you like them or not, will go light years in helping someone point you to a scent you'll love wearing.

    Re: Cologne topic

as an aside sandalwood is probably one of the greatest scents ever. Whole Foods and most indian groceries carry some form of Sandalwood Soap, which is really deep and rich smelling. My friend once gave me a cologne splash that she made herself of pretty much only sandalwood, it made an amazing cologne. Now when I pick a cologne I aim for one that has sandalwood in it in some form or another.

and dont be deterred by price when it comes to cologne, as it's been said scent is really really important-- it's the sense most closely associated with memory. If you're looking to make an impression you really should smell your best, cheesy as that sounds. A lot of the colognes out there are quite pricy but well worth the money if you find them 'perfect' for you.

I forgot to mention in addition to Vintage by John Varvatos and Envy by Gucci I sometimes wear Dolce and Gabbana, but only rarely as it's far too powerful and I have a really attuned sense of smell.

This thread kinda pwns, im getting lots of ideas for more colognes to try

p.s. I hate L'Eau D'Issey, idk why but it doesn't appeal to me.

    Re: Cologne topic

Was $55 for the large shower gel/cologne pack combo, as well as a free Escada gift bag (like a small gym bag).
    Macy*s.

Thing with Escada though is that they release one cologne for men every year, which gets discontinued at the end of the year, when they release the new one. So it's possible that you might find it for $200+ nowadays. The women's fragrances are treated largely the same way.
