    Countdown to Ubuntu 8.04

I know some of you don't care but dammit I do! Ubuntu 8.04 in 19 days. I'm running the beta and it's pretty awesome (Except for the 300+ updates that were waiting for me after I had just downloaded the iso for an hour). Firefox 3 has a lot of work to go before the real release. But it looks pretty cool. Screen shots later if requested.

Yes I personally cant wait. I have 2 Linux boxes at in which one is currently running Ubuntu beta also. Me and a few of my co-workers have it marked on our Calendars lol. I'm such a fucking nerd, but yes I am stoked!

Heh I locked my beta up really bad when trying to do updates. Double clicked the update notification and BOOM I couldn't even ctrl alt backspace out of it or even hit a prompt. Had to power cycle ! But now its running pretty smooth.

Oddly enough that has happened to me twice. One of the times it froze up it corrupted something with the Ubuntu Partition. Would not boot into specified partition and was just going to say fuck it and reformat but I turned it off, went to dinner and bam it worked fine. All in all I love it, outside of those 2 issues I have had no other problems with it whatsoever.

Nothing else for you outside of the cpu locking up?

No not right now at least. I don't plan on customizing it since I usually run betas then do a fresh install of the real release. ! Just a weird habit of mine. I'm sure I'll find more problems later. I also noticed that there are now 2 options when you install flash player. I was gonna try the second but I didn't want to fuck anything up. Know anything about it? Its Gnash SWF Player.

Yes, I installed Gnash on both of my systems, mainly because I wanted to see if it would nuke my systems or what side effects there would be to downloading them to the Beta. I know it used to have ALOT of issues with image rendering graphics where and the resolution would be super choppy. But that was last summer sometime. I have seen they worked alot of the bugs out of it since that time and I have yet to encounter any issues with it currently.

Figured id install run and risk the chance of a crash while there is nothing "vital" to my personal needs running out ot. Figures partnering that up with the beta would give it a reason to freak out, but it loads fine and doesnt stall out my system at all......yet.

Well, I'll assume you've heard of Linux. Basically there's many many different operating systems based off the basic linux kernel, each with their own little quirks and add-ons.

I'm getting a laptop in about a week to serve as my new desktop, and my current box will be just a file server, so I'm psyched about playing around with Linux on it.

Is there any Linux OS with a UI like Windows or Mac? Every time I read about Linux, a whole bunch of shit is done through a command-prompt thing, when there could just be some drop down menu of sorts.

Almost every Linux distro comes with graphical interfaces, although some are more tailored for being used only graphically than others. Personally, I love the command line.

I'd use Linux if I didn't have to have a degree in programming to get what I need out of it :/

You don't exactly need a degree to use/learn about Linux, though if you are not curious about computers it is somewhat hard to get the hang of it.

It all comes down to how much free time/dedication you have.

Exactly. I mean they are free, setting up a small partition and messing around with Ubuntu, Suse or one of these simple ones wont hurt anything. I used to mess around hard core with Redhat and Mandrake back in the day lol.

But yes, allocate a certain amount of space to the side as your partition or build a cheap little box and just throw Linux on it. Learning the commands are simple with time, its all about the repetitions. Not to mention you can DL a simple Linux/UNIX command list from the internet and go from there....

It's never to late to learn!

    Re: Countdown to Ubuntu 8.04

I only really got into linux after I took a class on it for my Computer networking degree... Then I was like OH HEY THIS IS AWESOME. And ever since I've had it on my laptop since vista runs like shit on it and so does XP (Wireless card drivers are shit). So I figured hey lets check this out. And boom everything works by default (Excluding mic I have yet to do the guide on how to get that to work mostly because its probing for the port and all that). I <3 Ubuntu right now and 8.04 is awesomez.

Wow, I never knew you were a shell person. I find it hard to use non-*nix machines because there's no native posix shell.

Also, help me keep the shell people alive. Can't wait for 8.04.

Rock on dude. Thats funny, my daughter loves, and I quote "Ubuntu and Suse more better". I have a binder that is strew with Unix and Linux commands and notes from over the year that she likes reading and looking at. Not bad for a 7 year old eh?

She is proficient in both Windows and my Linux box, but she prefers the latter. I sway her decision in no form or fashion.

The whole "Microsoft Windows" fad will fade away sooner or later, but in the interim, our kind is facing extinction.
Been hearing this for years now, lol.
