And on the same note, we can say whatever we want and hold whatever opinions we want to here... My opinion is Milkman is a fucking douche. Lots of people say dubya is a douche, and every time he opens his mouth he gets made fun of. The same will happen with your precious milkman, if he just stays quiet no one would notice. Standing on a soapbox with (very) unimpressive accomplishments is not the way to be well-received.
Don't get me wrong here, I care *zilch* that you guys are beating Kirin now. As said earlier in the thread, there are constantly people at all levels of the game. It's the fact that it's him and his constant attitude towards endgame people. Even in a post bragging about beating KIRIN, he has the cajones to call out people in DA. Could he try ANY HARDER to just be a gigantic douche??? I can't imagine such a scenario.
On an unrelated note, even after several years, TSM's sig is still the best ever.
God.
The point, Kimiko, if you can open your mind to the opinions of others instead of using your epic tunnel vision is that he is a published journalist writing about a game we all play. As such, journalistic integrity demands (yes, demands!) that he have working knowledge of the subject matter he writes about. He clearly does not, and has let FFXI fall by the wayside. As such, since the game has passed him by, he should discontinue writing about it. At this point all he is doing is lending credence to the notion that this game is difficult and too time-intensive to accomplish anything. The reality is exactly the opposite with the exception of a few extremely rare pieces of equipment.
What brings the anger out is his repeated editorializing on subjects he knows likely nothing about with respect not only to the endgame in FFXI (Kings, Wyrms, etc.) but endgame players. His repeated attacks with no evidence and reason other than the fact that he got butthurt because someone called him out on being a no talent fuckstick make him out to be just a little child who isn't willing or isn't good enough to get what he wants on his own, so he chooses the easy way out. He writes his little blog about things that aren't important, demeaning the accomplishments of others by calling them names, all the while being the one whose lack of relative skill and general knowledge are posted publicly, on blogs or in mags, contributing to the idea that he does know what he's talking about, as he is a journalist.
In other words, whatadouche. Fuck you Milkman.

That particular blog will probably be read by several thousand people, as 1up is one of the more popular video game news outlets on the web. As such, he's able to say things to lots of people whom don't know very much about the game. Moreover, as a 1up editor, people aren't going to question the validity of such a blog post, as the public often trusts its news outlets.
Those of us that know better, it serves as nothing more than a mouthpiece for the devteam. It's advertising guised as "opinion".
And, while we're at it:

While I completely disagree with it and believe that even respected journalists have the right to their own personal view of things. Sure he may well be "behind the times" as you have suggested, is their anything wrong with that? No, some of us do play this game for the simple enjoyment of it rather than consider a race for the highest pinnacles one can achieve. Personally, as a blog writer myself, I draw that fine distinction between journalistic fact & personal opinion. Can people be swayed by personal opinion, sure they can. I'm just saying that opinion should be kept as that... opinion. If you want to come out and blast Milkman for saying what he thinks, fine, go right ahead. Me personally, I defend what he writes out of both my loyalty to the shell & the friendships that have come through the years, and I will continue to do so till the last.Originally Posted by Ish

I get the basic points and I recognize the name, he writes for 1up, his insights are about on the level of the Brady guide, etc. But I mean, the amount of animosity towards him it feels like there's something I'm missing. Did he come on here at some point and was a giant ass, or does he have a huge ego about the fact that he writes about FFXI for an online magazine? Or do people just dislike him this much because he does what he does without being as knowledgeable or accomplished as many of the people who post here? I'm hoping it's something more than just that lol
He publicly calls out endgame players time and time again (myself included, by name, in case you wonder why I post here) in his blog. That, in itself, is enough reason to make fun of the guy. If you read through this thread you'll see examples I have given where it is tough to be more of a hypocrite than he is.Originally Posted by Suiram
As others have said, he doesn't do much for the image of FFXI as well. Anyone who has followed the MMORPG scene and knows anything about FFXI might know that Kirin is like 97 years old at this point.

I'd suggest starting here. It's a couple years old but this should give you some insights. The original article predates the changeover from the Roundabouts to CloakAndDagger
I don't like Milkman either, but this part made me lol.Originally Posted by Ish
IMO, any animosity is irrelevant, as long as what the people are saying is accurate, and accuracy is the area of contention. It doesn't seem so unreasonable considering he's the only major outlet for this sort of thing. Other FFXI information centers are usually within the established community (e.g. BG), so not only is bullshit sifted out more easily, anything new or interesting that's added or discovered is not going to be bringing people in.
Frankly, I'm not surprised by, well, anything and whatever you say about Milkman, the fact is he needs to brush up on the game before he writes another entry.
I remember this guy from the magazine when he first started out. Yeah leveling multiple characters on the same account is a GREAT idea.
As someone who writes a blog, I can understand how he is entitled to his opinion, especially on his own blog. If he wants to get excited about Kirin that's definitely his choice - and if he's lucky enough to have a bunch of readers read what he writes due to his position that's good for him.
That being said, he has an obvious bias against endgame that is really easy to see. I think this is detrimental to the game in general when someone claims to know a great deal about endgame when he has not experienced it and blames it ALL on botting, when botting is really only an issue at maybe 4 endgame mobs - KB, Fafhogg, Aspi, and KA. Here are some direct quotes which I think shows my point...
If he claims he's on a server where people bot Cerberus for that Algol, or even vigorously camp Cerberus before it pops, I'd love to know what server this is. Any LS with the drive and numbers can find and get Cerberus. If you want to make the case for botting ruining certain NMs, that's fine, but not Cerberus. If he can't get an Algol, that's on his LS not being at the point of being able to do it (or has no interest)....but I do want things like a Ridill and an Algol one of these days.
This one is a slightly nit picky but if you just killed Kirin and said something to the effect of I'm so glad we are now able to do this kind of stuff now, my sense is that you have not experienced or know the inherent difficulties of higher end HNMs. This is not a knock on your LS - we all got to start somewhere and we were all once at the point where Kirin was a huge deal; but I think it's inaccurate and misleading to pass it off like you can kill everything in the game other than AV now. Things like Vrtra, Tiamat, Khim, etc. are completely different strategy-wise and a whole new experience. I'm not saying his LS cannot do these because they suck, just that it's misleading to act like you can when you haven't tried anything near the calibur of NM.I mean, we're not going to be taking down Absolute Virtue any time soon, but we can do just about everything else.
Props on killing Kirin with 14. I know you can go lower and all that but that's really good for a newer group to Kirin. The DRK/NIN comment is really off though. I think it speaks to some of his bias and lack of actual endgame experience though, since the idea that DRK/NIN KC massing is the only way to wreck half the things in the game is a common misconception people who don't actually experience endgame ganks think.Yes, I know you can TP burn Kirin if you have a whole pile of DRK/NINs with axes and Kraken Clubs, but I think we did pretty good on our first crack at Kirin, with only 14 people taking part in the battle.
I guess the key thing to realize is who he is writing to as his target audience. He's not writing for long time endgamers like the people typically seen on BG - he's writing probably to more casual players. I personally don't think he's an idiot and his LS doesn't suck, but that doesn't make him really accurate or really qualified to talk about all endgame either - he's basically talking about stuff he has very little or no experience with when he speaks of endgame. Still if people read it, then props to him and he doesn't have to change anything as long as people keep reading.
What he is doing isn't journalism. It's editorializing. He's spewing a blatantly uninformed opinion and because he is a journalist, his word will be taken as fact more than that of say, anyone here.Originally Posted by Kimiko

His work is just splendid and I wouldn't change a thing.
