    PSP Free Games Info

Just purchased a PSP, and I see all these sites for free games...are these easy to get and put on a memory stick and play on PSP? Like can an entire game like Crisis Core, be downloaded on a memory stick? If so how much of the stick is 1 game gonna take up?

You're talking about hacking the PSP, which isn't that hard but isn't exactly easy anymore. You can't just plug in a memory stick and play, you have to install custom firmware. The hardest part is flashing the custom firmware, since you run the risk of bricking your PSP if you do it incorrectly. You need what is known as a Pandora battery, which is just a battery modded so it forces the PSP into service mode, letting it flash off a memory stick instead of the firmware on the PSP. From there, you load a memory stick that loads the custom firmware on the PSP. Once it's loaded, all you have to do is download a game (no, we won't be telling you where to get them) throw it on a memory stick and you're good to game. Most PSP games range from about 300MB to 1Gig+.

Google for it, there are tons of guides out there that describe how to do this.

Depending on what version of PSP you have, you can use various methods. 3.50 you can use lumines, 3.30 you can use GTA:LCS (unpatched, hard to get a hold of) to force your PSP to downgrade to 1.50. From 1.50 you can load custom firmware. I use the firmware from http://www.dark-alex.org/ ;they're just reverse engineered versions of sony's firmware. Where to get games depends on what you use to borrow software, there's torrents, warez sites or usenet.

Just a quick note, if you use the firmwares from dark-alex then don't get a 8gb memory stick, they don't recognise it yet so you're stuck with 4gb which is more than enough.

EDIT: You don't NEED a pandora's battery, but that's the way you can load custom firmware regardless of version. http://forums.qj.net/f-guides-hacks-hom ... 18799.html is a good guide for doing this.

I'm almost positive that you need a pandora battery to hack the slim PSP (likely what the OP has since its new) unless you know someone who already has a hacked PSP. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

If he has a PSP slim then I think you have to have a pandora's battery yeah, but he said he just purchased not that it's new

True also, bottom line Slim PSP = need modded battery, Fat PSP = just need to use the memory stick.

The pandora's battery is bulletproof correct?

I got a bud I'm able to hook-up with that can do the process for me, but I really don't want any possibility of ending up with a bricked PSP and no way to fix it.
(I just want my SNES-emulation functionality back when I had v1.50 where it was easy to run homebrew ;/)

On another note, are those larger-charge PSP batteries worth picking up? Really getting tired of having to have the AC adapter handy on this thing nowadays.

As long as you have the pandora battery, you can unbrick any PSP (providing theres nothing physically wrong or fried) and flash to the custom firmware.

You can either buy one (like off of ebay) or make one yourself. It's pretty easy, it's just a case of opening the battery and fiddling around with the wiring inside so it doesn't boot the eeprom. All in all should take you about 15 mins; but you'll need some basic tools like a stanley knife etc.

If you search in google for "Pandora's battery" you can probably come across a guide on how to manufacture yourself one.
