Targeting the Captain

When you go to attack the captain from behind, does Chi Blast work? This way I can pull from afar w/o worrying about aggro'ing bubly or him turning on me at the last second I'm trying to melee strike.

Edit: I went ahead and tried it anyway. I got the surprise attack message when I hit him with it, but we only got 2 chests. Anyone know whats up?

He shouldn't turn at all if you killed the imp without alerting him.

and both message when he get attacked whether you do it right will imply he is surprised, but the one you're looking for is the "ugh...what!?" or something like that.

Haven't done this in a while though, so my memories might fail me.

Is there anything else that has to be done? I did a run last sunday, the captain was surprised and everything but the 3rd chest didnt pop.Is there anything that a person kiting the captain can do that prevents the last chest pop or did we get the last chest and mess up a different chest?

I believe that he aggroes /ja like ToAU fomors do and he'll be alerted as you're using it, so no third chest. It's really not hard to run up and punch him in the back of the head anyway. You just basically stand around 25' away in the doorway and start running as the monkey is running towards the captain and is about 5' away from him.

i seem to remember being told that one could not hit him with any ranged attack and have it considered a surprise attack. instead, you must physically strike him first, and as was stated above, you CAN NOT LOSE HATE on the boss at any time during the fight or you won't get a 3rd box.

Interesting note - pets work, and Bubbly won't aggro them, even if he sees them. The pet has to land the hit obviously, so it's a risk, but it makes it very easy to do it right. We never had him aggro the attack command JA when we did it this way, and only ever got 2 chests if the pet missed. Using fenny with self-acc buff, I don't think he ever missed. Just have to do attack JA from far enough away, and have the smn/bst/whatever actually build some hate on him (dia worked for us) so he doesn't deaggro.

Pretty sure the captain doesn't aggro JA, otherwise our THF would be aggroing whenever he does Sneak Attack.

I made my ashu static watch this video on youtube before we did it. This vid also shows the thf using SA fairly close to the captain, so it throws the aggroing JA thing out the window.

If you make someone watch that video, make sure they know that the captain no longer saunters around that slowly. He's either at normal running speed now or close enough that you have to treat it that way.

Do you mean as in don't let it deaggro? I ask this because I've had the chest pop on several occasions where hate has been traded throughout members.

Hate can be traded without a problem, but it seems he just can't go yellow. I can't tell what makes chest 3 give a ??? Box instead of a ??? Gloves though...
