Re: help me pick which college to go to :D

SJSU sucks. Case in point: I go there. You don't want to go to the same school as me, now do you?

But seriously, I'm an engineering student at SJSU; the engineering department's fine. I'm antisocial as hell so I can't tell you shit about the nightlife though.

If you do go into engineering at SJSU take E10 as soon as possible before the robot kits get more cut up; they were new the semester I took it (last semester) and we cut a lot of the parts up.

I have a good friend that graduated from Pomona. Great school, he loved it, makes bank now (He was a math major).

For the love of God, do not pick a school based on the nightlife. Any college you go to you will have fun times, it's just up to you to make the best of it. I transferred from Arizona State (Night life galore) to Northern Arizona (dirty hippie town) but I'd say I'm having even more fun at NAU. It's just what you make of it, and I'm not just saying that.

I'd check out Cal Poly San Luis Obispo if I were you. Also, as one of the above posters said, look into transferring to UCSD for your last 2 years.

    qft

Last thing you want to do is pay to go to college just to spend more time/attention to partying/nightlife than the actual school.

haha, I'm at ASU but from Flagstaff, sometimes I wish I had stayed up there. It's kind of a boring town to be a high-schooler in, but after that it really opens up, great atmosphere. Tempe overall kinda fucking blows (for me, at least). Unless you're absolutely dead set on a stereotypical party school night/social life, make sure you're going to ASU for a school related reason. Although on that note, the engineering school here is pretty decent and gets loads of funding (got a 100m grant in the last year or so; one of the local housing developers pours loads into that school). Might be worth looking into- I came for the 3d animation program but dicked around with some CSE freshman year, the math/engineering faculty I had were pretty good.

if you are going to UNLV prepare to take out of state tuition up the ass

It doesn't matter where you go to college the first 2 years - you can just transfer after that and all you are taking a lot of the time are prereqs and electives. Go to cheapest/most fun college imo. Have fun for 2 years, enjoy college, skate by with Bs, then transfer out if the program is bad.

not just asking this to be contrary, but how easy is it to transfer into a good school/program if you've skated through your gen eds with all Bs?

    SJSU:
    -in silicon valley, ca
-easier to get a job as engineer
-1.5hr drive away from home (good/bad)
-stay in closer contact with old friends
    -everything is expensive in california
    -lots of asians (good)
-campus not as big as unlv
    -good weather
    >> hows the nightlife in san jose? what can you do for fun?

    UNLV:
-living in my friend's house, saves a lot of money for housing (really nice house)
-i have friends there, including 2 best friends
    -nicer campus
    -great nightlife
-really hot (i dont like it)
-lots of fun things to do
    -good nightlife: the strip
-far from home (which can be a good/bad thing)
-offers a lot of majors in case i change my mind
    -possibility of scholarship
    -better environment
    -bigger campus
-not in california (ehh kinda bad)
-cheaper gas, no smog checks :D
    >>hows the job opportunities here? should i move back to CA after?

i also have options to go to san francisco state and cal poly pomona but im not really that interested compared to the other 2
I moved to Reno from SF right after I graduated college and these two things are by far the biggest advantages of living in NV. There is no state tax so your paychecks from work will be larger, and cost of living is much lower than CA. I really like it here.

Well, Cal Poly Ponoma is decent when it comes to Computer Science and Architecture. A couple of my friends attended that univ. Pomona is a ghost town though, so there aren't a lot of "activities" for you to do during the day or night...

From Flagstaff eh? My girlfriend grew up here, graduated from Flag high, then went to ASU (where I met her), and she's graduating from ASU this spring. I'm sure you guys would know each other somehow.

Flag is cool, but yeah I know what you mean. Unless you're 21 there really isn't a whole lot to do. Being 21 opens up a lot of music opportunities and stuff like that. During the day Flag is sick. I was just outside allllll day at the Pit rock-climbing. But yeah during the night it's meh. I'm actually trying to find stuff to do tonight, I might try to get some people to go up to the observatory with me, that sounds decent. And there's an art gallery opening up on campus, but I kinda just wanna drink all night haha.

Yeah ASU is an acquired taste. I spent way too much time longboarding on camelback, but you're right it is actually a very decent school, it's just very hard to stay focused. I still have never been to Mill Ave, and I plan to keep it that way. I dig a lot of the restaurants around town (Copper Kettle, Kyoto's in Oldtown Scottsdale, Postino's, La Grande Orange, Fili B's for drunk food). I hope you're diggin' ASU, it just got way too big way too fast for my liking. All those new dorms and the light rail and the new water main and all that shit just ruined it for me.

Re: help me pick which college to go to :D

I live in Vegas and have been going to UNLV for the past year, after spending most of my life in Cali. I'm probably really biased due to growing up in an area of Cali that I really love, but all in all UNLV is a nice school. You'll have to jump through hoops about tuition as someone said, out-of-state tuition is a killer. Definitely no shortage of nightlife in Vegas as I'm sure everyone knows already, if you're into that kind of thing (which it sounds like you are, in which case you'll likely never run out of stuff to do in Vegas)

I was/am the exact opposite; if you're not into the whole clubbing/drinking thing, your options decrease dramatically. I wouldn't say summer in Vegas is any worse than summers in mainstream Cali (Sacramento/LA/etc) but Vegas gets the least annual rainfall out of any city in the US, so be prepared for sun all the time, even if it's cold out. I got tired of it real quick, and miss the rain terribly.

Entry-level work in Vegas will be plentiful for the most part, beyond that I've no idea.

Everywhere I've been (in this country) has sucked exponentially more than CA. Born and raised, tired of it, but leaving the state makes me realize why everyone wants to be here.

    If all schools were equal...

Las Vegas is a place to visit, definitely not to live,
Pomona sounds like a hole in the wall,
San Jose like the 3rd largest city in the country (by population) and is the Silicon Valley as far as "tech" jobs go...
I forget what the other one was.

I'll vote SJSU even though I hate the place. I am assuming I'm just biased against because it's not far enough from home for me to consider a place to attend and tended to be a "safety" for most people I knew from highschool that were to pussy to up and move away. (I ended up moving 4 hrs south)

    edit::

oh yeah, SFSU. That was pretty much the "go to" for all my friends that wanted to live in SF but didn't know what they were doing with their lives. I love being in SF more than anything and I do plan on living there within 6 months or so, but I don't think that school is very strong for what you're doing... plus SJ is only like 50 miles south of it.

guess it's bit of the opposite for me. i've lived all over the US and cali's been the worst. i actually lock my doors here, i hate the high population and higher cost of living. the only thing i can think of that isn't so bad here is the weather

Back on topic: I suggest UNLV, as it seems it would look better when you transfer/graduate on your resume. Plus SJSU whored me and begged me to go there and I'm from all the way across the country, I thought they were very desperate.
