Just sending out feelers, what do we think of people that "rp" in games. I don't mean "cyber". I mean actual arrpee as in D&D over the nets with no dice. Reason I ask, best friend wants to make an rpls. I'm kind of >_>, but she's really into it making it like yesterday.

I think that as long as you don't get in other peoples way, its perfectly fine to do it, if you mind likeminded individuals.
This is like asking what do you think about voyeurism or swinger clubs, or RL groups of D&D players.

Experience actually roleplaying in a game like Dungeons and Dragons would help. If you found yourself alienated and unable to do it at a table with IRL friends you'll feel even worse doing it in a video game.

There are tons of people who RP in FFXI, more than most people suspect I bet. You don't notice them because most of them aren't cockbags who stay in character 24/7, they'll be happy to RP with other RP'ers and not bother regular players. I've had various conversations over the years with RP lovers who happily drop out of character to xp with regular players.

So yeah, don't make judgements based on the few mouthy retards who go too far.

I do play D&D and other table top rpgs. I do RP in ffxi, except it's with irl friends anyway. If I'm bored not doing jack shit and Tess goes, "omg let's RP I'm bored", I don my wizard hat and robe and get to it. It's fun. The most anyone will catch is random emotes, you know the standard ffxi ones. The concept of having a linkshell to do it like she wants just baffles me. As we all know the more people do something, the more retarded they get, it would only take so long for it to degrade. I fear that I'll log in to find some fruitfags cybering. Not cool. She's dead set on this though, and I cannot convince her otherwise. Hence the feelers.

The last time I seriously RP'd irl was when everyone on my block <3'd Power Rangers . Doing it in a video game just seems like work to me.

Having to type long, pointless, drawn out conversations about jack and shit just seems odd to me. How long does that type of fun really last in a video game?

I'd straight up ask the shell holder's policies on cybering in the shell. Even non-RP shells need a strict no-tolerance policy on cybering and if the RP one lacks it I'd stay far away.

I don't see the point in RP'ing in FFXI, personally. When it comes down to it, it's a JRPG. You follow the story as told, and the end results are pretty much going to be the same either way. Sure, you have a handful of quests/missions where you can choose a harsher answer than another, but it's just a hiccup in the dialogue.

Contrast that to RPGs where your chosen attitude can actually change things. FFXI doesn't give you the option to negotiate XP from mobs, or do a quest for Fafnir to get a Ridill. It doesn't give you the option to kill a shopkeeper and loot his stuff.
There's one role to play, the one that's been scripted for you.

One can act differently towards people in-game, but that's not exactly roleplaying either. If you want to cuss party members out, steal LS banks, and attempt MPK at every turn, that's not you -pretending- to be an asshole, that's you -being- one towards your fellow players.
One's behavior is less a role playing thing, and more an expression of themselves. You might have your odd person who decides to be a healer, and always help people in need, etc. However, it's unlikely that person was an ADD 13 year old to start with.

Past being quirky, there's not much room to RP.

I'm not into it personally, but what they do is their own fucking business. It's a massively multiplayer ROLE PLAYING GAME after all. People who RP in the game are actually doing it the right way, I suppose. In my opinion since it's not mandated to role play, they're going to run into countless shitheads and cockgobblers who will ruin it for them. Hard to stay in character and suspend disbelief when some douchebags are in a /shouting match in whitegate over whether mudkips are something everyone should like.

Well, dunno about RPing in 11, but I used to RP over AOL in terms of both fantasy and wrestling....it was fun for a while but as I grew up I grew out of it, however I still have both of my RPing screen names lol...

I guess in 11 it could be fun, I'm sure a lot of people have given background stories to their character, just never acted them out or anything over ls. Could be kinda fun actually lol...but I probably wouldn't do it. I guess try it and see how it goes, if you like it stay in LS, if you don't, leave.

Edit: First seeing this thread, I was hoping it would be the screen shots of the IM log of the guy that was trying to cyber some chick and pretended to be a wizard. That is hilarious each and everytime I read it lol....so I was a little disappointed.

As long as you don't make gay-ass macros it's cool. But when I see "Odin shall rain down fiery doom on <t> with the strength of Fire IV!!" I start blist'n. And once you're blisted I leave the party or kick your ass.

edit: To contribute to the thread's vocalization about roleplaying when they were young, I did the same thing, except I didn't take it seriously. My friend wanted me to get into roleplaying and create my own character, so I made up LOLROBOT who shot roflasers

I had some .gifs I made but I never uploaded them and eventually deleted it. The forums really loved my "style" but she got angry at me for "degrading" her hobby (lol) and eventually stopped talking to me.

I was also in a LS that EVENTUALLY turned into a roleplaying LS. Oh my fucking God was that horrible. They would have a story time where one person would write out their blog entries about various adventures (which I still have their links, and tbh they were pretty well written except it took THIRTY FUCKING MINUTES TO WRITE IT OUT AND NOBODY ELSE COULD SPEAK). I left that LS, and Demo's definitely right: it does eventually dissolve into a cyber-type LS. Well, at least it did for that one<_<

RP gets on my nerve to no end. Pandy has a notorious resident player that used to and probably still does finish every single sentence, phrase or question with a ~Mew ~Mew. Camping, Party Chat, Dynamis etc... It did not matter. So from my personal experience as long as it does not infringe on other players well being and enjoyment of the game then I guess its ok.

I get the chills just thinking about it again.

I was in an LS with 2 people that roleplayed, and they were hilarious in character. I was kind of envious of them, because its impossible for me to joke around that way. Most roleplayers use hackneyed LOTR dialog though which makes it look stupid.
