I decided something after thinking about FFXI in particular a bit. The game could really be interesting if you think about it, if everyone role played. You've got these diverse groups of people joining together in "Linkshells" going out and fighting monsters and doing things as groups in this world.

The problem is, a majority of people don't play the game like that, so the experience is ruined (like someone else said in this thread) when you realize other people aren't role playing. So while role playing might be extremely fun and an interesting concept, it's useless when you're doing it when everybody else isn't; in fact it's multi-level role playing...

Go play WoW. They have entire servers devoted to it. These servers will even go so far as to have staged events, sever wide. Important historical battles (wow lore) and such.

It's always funny when someone from your Battlegroup (that's a group of servers who PvP together) comes from one of the RP servers. People usually give them shit, but I find them hilarious. I secretly wish I had that quality where I didn't care if I made a total ass out of myself, because what I'm doing is fun to me. People who Cosplay also have that quality, but thats something I could never see my self doing.

I used to be heavily into role-playing in MMOs(in UO it was huge).

Misconception that role-playing is people who act with a more renaissance flair that most people find legitimately annoying. Especially since in terms of FFXI its clear that's not how anyone actually speaks for the most part.

I agree that a lot more people RP than they realize, and a lot of people RP without even realizing they are.

Even if you're just lying about what you've done, and who you are IRL...you're RPing. You've assumed a role out-side your norm and are attempting to be convincing.

For the first two years of my FFXI experience I pretended to be a character who is very opposed to my core beliefs and it was a disaster ;0.

I took a break and when I came back I decided I wasn't going to bother, because assuming that role added enough difficulty to the point where the act itself was an impediment to my enjoying the actual game.

People almost universally thought I sold my account because I didn't act the same way anymore.

That compliment in itself at least didn't make me regret what I'd done, and well I wouldn't go back to it, strongly colored my ffxi experience and brought me a great deal of joy.

I was in an LS with 2 people that roleplayed, and they were hilarious in character. I was kind of envious of them, because its impossible for me to joke around that way. Most roleplayers use hackneyed LOTR dialog though which makes it look stupid.

we had a discussion about this on LS, literally 2 days ago, and someone asked

"What's wrong with rp?" to which I initially replied automatically, "Um, a better question: What isn't wrong with rp?"

Anyway discussion ensued and eventually conceded that so long as it doesn't affect anyone else, then by all means go. Imo it's really quite similar to PDA's (not handhelds...), kissing in public or all-out groping makes other people uncomfortable although they wouldn't flinch if they saw it in a movie or they themselves were involved in it.

In short: consenting adults. Don't push it on other people, ya it's weird, but it could be fun as hell if you're into it.

I used to be in RP LSes when I first started FFXI, it was me and two RL friends combined with some people we met early on in the game, I'd say I was in one for a good yearish until I really got into the game and joined an HNM shell. I see nothing wrong with it at all, I had lots of fun but then it turned into a bunch of stupid faggots. Fuck what everyone else thinks, I say. But I had my fill of it... I don't think I'd ever RP in a game again, not because I'm embarassed, but the crowd it attracts are.... dumb.
