    Re: Earthquake in IL

I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and it woke me up at 5:40 am with my bed shaking. I said, "this is some bullshit", then went back to bed.

    Re: Earthquake in IL

Also from what I was seeing on TV, because of the ground make up or elevation or something a quake on the west coast where it's common can hardly be felt until it's at like 2-2.5 or something. But if a 2-2.5 hit New York half the city would fall down and it'd be catastrophic since it's right on the coast at a low sea level, or close to the plates or something of the sort. So you can't just go by the scale of the earthquake to determine how strong it "really is".

The distance the shock traveled had to do with the ground structure (I guess it's harder than most regions) so that it can travel further.

Oh and I slept through the whole thing, suckers.

I don't think a 2.5 would cause that much trouble would it? Maybe it just sounds weird to me as someone who can sleep through even the ones that are worth the news in CA.

This actually makes me feel a little bit better because the midwest has been overdue for an earthquake for many decades. I'd rather have a small one than another new madrid disaster.

I'm about 2 hours west of STL and I didn't feel shit.

I'm like an hour south of STL and was woke up by it.

I've heard a number of people today who started worrying and commenting about how it might wake up New Marid. It's maddening enough to punch a kitten. I remember the last time New Marid was supposed to go, it was '92 or something. We had drills in school and what to do in the event of an earthquake, etc. When it didn't happen, they just said it's building up further to be even more catastrophic, in which case everybody between it and STL (and the surrounding radius) are fucked, or will suffer considerable damage atleast.

    Re: Earthquake in IL

for those saying "this is bullshit, it's not a big deal, stop putting it on the news"

there were some structural damage to buildings in southern illinois, as well as kentucky (large bricks had become dislodged on an old building, and the debris was all over the road. if someone had been walking in that spot when it occured, they would've died easily. fortunately there haven't been any injuries from what I've heard). it was a 5.2-5.4, which could easily shake an area up if they're not prepared

as someone already stated, this area isn't structurally sound when it comes to earthquakes, so more damage could be done here via them happening vs California

also, this was most likely the New Madrid fault, the most dangerous fault in the United States, however it's very inactive

    Re: Earthquake in IL

It's possibly a once in a lifetime event for people living in the Midwest. It isn't about the small damage it caused to a few buildings. It's about experiencing something many of us will probably never experience again. It does feel strange to have experienced an earthquake and to have never seen a tornado in person now. I really want to see a tornado as long as it is a safe distance away. (plenty have been within a couple of miles of me before, but trees blocked any view....I got to drive on the road one demolished a bunch of buildings on every day with everyone going 20mph under the speed limit to gawk for about a 2 month period)

I live in LA and tornados/hurricanes scare the shit out of me. I'm glad all that happens over here is the occasional 3.nothing. Earthquakes don't fling things around at 120 MPH.

    Re: Earthquake in IL

I was completely oblivious to this happening until like 9 am when I got to work. I saw in the morning I had a text at 5 am from a friend that lives in Fairfield, Ca but I was getting ready for work so I didn't respond just yet. I got to work and had the following exchange via text...

Her: Hey, you okay out there? And good morning. (initial 5 am text)
Me: I'm in bad shape, my back is killing me and I may have a fractured rib.
Her: OMG, is that from the quake?
Me: Lol no, it's from my hockey game....what quake btw? We don't get those in Chicago...

I then looked up on msn and saw the headline, was sorta dumbfounded that I slept right through it....and then kinda sad that I didn't get to experience it. Certainly is rare to happen out here though.

I wouldn't call it once in a lifetime when we had one this bad, or worse in the summer of 02. I remember that one actually knocking frames off our walls.

#7. Cali doesn't even make the list until #15.
Little late, but technically the Cascadia earthquake at #2 on that list includes the entire coast of Washington and Oregon, and part of California's.
