but you're talking about ratings, so you have to consider all tiers of viewers.
    1) Sports Fans (people who love a specific or most sports)
    2) Regional Fans (people who love everything about their hometown/team)
    3) Casual Fans (people who watch because it's something to do and talk about the next day)

the first one never counts because it's a very small number and most of them will watch regardless.

SA vs NJ - has a small group from SA, a small/mid-sized group from NY/NJ
SA vs DET - has a small group from SA, a mid-sized group from DET
DAL vs MIA - has a large group from DAL, a small group from MIA

but anytime you involve the 3rd group, which Miami does, you can almost completely ignore the 2nd group, because the 3rd group is national. that audience is what makes the ratings for the MJ-era.

the 3rd group is not what you call "general basketball fans". they're the people that D-Wade commercials are made for who rarely ever watch basketball otherwise.

Re: 2007-2008 NBA Playoffs - THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE

I was considering everything, then you said "well, maybe it's because it's a smaller market". Then I switched gears to talking about market viewers. Market viewers make up a small percentage of the fans, and the "market" isn't going to move ratings like the casual fan who is watching because Shaq, d-wade, Kobe, w/e is in the series. Even the NBA acknowledges that the ratings only really move tremendously when L.A. is participating. I was just trying to justify the argument that the "market" isn't the reason why the spurs do so poorly in ratings. It's mostly because the "casual" fan doesn't really care about their team. The SPurs have very few viewers in your third group.

South Florida is the capitol of bandwagon nation. When the teams around here are good, everyone and their mother shows up to the games. When teams are bad, the stadiums are emptier than a motherfucker.

Edit: Partly because theres a lot of shit to do in South Florida. Sports are 2nd to the beach, clubs, etc etc.

I can't wait for Wednesday, Lakers vs Spurs are going to be one hell of a series. The Spurs are going to put Bowen on Kobe and it's going to be interesting to see how Fisher does against Parker and Gasol vs Duncan.

    Edit: And Ariza is back

Lol one of the top plays of the year is Manu dunking in Yao's face off an inbound steal, and tell me any other players who make passes through Kobe's legs or other player's legs. I don't think plays like that are very boring lol. Also, it's not only me that compares Manu or Parker to these guys, any NBA commentator says it. Barkley brought it up in the post game show last night and used Manu, Wade, and Kobe in the same example. I agree they're not the same as Lebron or Kobe but saying they're boring is making it sound like they have no style to their games.

it's not so much that the backcourt isnt exciting, but more that the frontcourt/supporting players don't add to the energy and/or take away from it

Re: 2007-2008 NBA Playoffs - THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE

Agree with the Blazers. They'll get really good with experience I hope. Watching the Pistons last night, I had an epiphany. They are nothing like the Spurs. I can actually watch a Pistons game enjoyably. I thought last year, it may have just been because of Lebron that made the series watchable, but OH NO! Watching 'Sheed implode is fucking sweet. When he fouled - someone- forgot whom, he looked at the ref with the Tim Duncan look, then slapped him on the ass. If Duncan acted like 'sheed and got T'd up about 3-4 times a series, it would make it so much more entertaining.

    Edit:

We are catching up to the lame New Englanders/Canucks that post in the NHL thread. We must trudge forward!

I miss the Lakers-Kings matchups from a few years back. Those were always good series even though the Kings never won (if I remember right it was because they had no answer to Shaq). Wish Duncan would play more like Webber did back in those days. He's got the backcourt to feed him those plays but he just doesn't seem to put much energy into making exciting plays, just pretty ones (like a hook shot). Sheed plays with just about the same style Duncan does but has all that emotion thrown into it.

not exactly about this year's playoffs, but holy fawkin shit did the bulls get lucky or what?

pretty lucky for Beasley too, to get a chance on a team that he should instantly make a playoff team

Yay for an excuse to be a fairweather fan too, with Beasley and Heinrich together how could I not cheer for them hehe

Totally called it 3 pages back.

I think Rose going to the Bulls works out perfectly for the Heat. The Heat get a good low post scorer to compliment Wade, and Kirk Hinrich is guaranteed traded. He may not be a true PG but he's a decent quick fix for the Heat at that position. Their starter this year was a fledgling from the NBDL.... and

HUGE LOL AT THE PROPOSED CARMELLO ANTHONY DEAL

Top 15 player in the league for Richard Jefferson?

Remind me why Lebron is going to resign with the Cavs?

Wait, the bulls said they're taking Rose? That would be pretty dumb imo...

That's what most sportswriters are saying. Rose is from Chicago and is most likely the fan favorite.

Spurs are spanking the Lakers right now. Hope they don't get comfortable and lose the game.
