It's awesome when your owner is cool with wasting money, but the dollar for dollar hit is ridiculous.
b) Kobe dragged shit (Smush Parker, Kwame Brown, rest of the Lakers before they got good?) to the playoffs in the West the last two years. The only decent player on those teams was Lamar Odom and his stats and performance weren't overwhelming till Gasol came. Garnett couldn't even will his team to win games in a division that's just as bad as the Pacific while dealing with less injuries.
Kobe dragged his team to 45 wins both seasons and what did it amount to? 2 first round playoff exits. Kobe's the best player since Jordan and what has he done in the years post shaq? In three seasons: he missed the playoffs once, and was bounced in the first round two straight years. Practically mirroring the things Garnett did in Minnesota w/o help, but you don't see anyone calling Kobe a perennial "loser" do you?
My opinion is that it's dumb to say the guy is a loser because he had no one around him. Then you turn around and say he's overrated once he starts winning because he has help. I mean, what do you want him to do?
How DARE he lead a good team to 66 wins and we say he's ACTUALLY GOOD because of it. Nope, he's a LOSER because he didn't take his team to the finals like lebron james!
I never said he was overrated but the T-wolves missed the playoffs the last three years Garnett was there. He's supremely skilled but not dominant. He has a bad habit of disappearing sometimes.
KG isn't a loser, but he's definitely not a winner. Dude has skills, but when you're letting Wally Szczerbiak take the shots at the end of a series deciding game, there's something wrong.
His contract had to be one of the worst ever. Signed before the new CBA in 1999, you can't even begin comparing it to Kidd's. Even Shaq's contract wasn't that bad, just had lots of zeros. It fucked over the T-wolves for a long time. They couldn't sign more guys because his contract ate up so much cap space and was structured to get prohibitively worse.
Look at what he's going to be doing to the Celtic's payroll the next couple years as he starts to decline (unless the new CBA goes with the rumors).
Suns vs. Lakers: Suns were burning everyone except the Spurs the two years they beat the Lakers. I sure as hell didn't expect any wins, much less career performances out of Kwame Brown and Smush Parker (currently racking up DNP-CDs in Memphis and out of the league respectively).
1: KG is dominant. He is top 5 in the league at what he does, on many people's lists top 3. He is no question dominant.
2: All this talk about his contract being bad originally from the Twolves and now on the Celtics has nothing, zip, nada, to do with him. Lets examine the facts: he was fresh out of high schoo, offered over 100mil, you would sign that contract and give your left nut to finalize it. Don't blame him for signing a contract that would "cripple a franchise." Basketball is a business. Rarely does a player have the option of making that kind of bank and winning championships at the same time. At that age, before he was 20 for shit sakes, $$ > rings. Rings can come later.
Enter the Celtics. The Twolves thing didn't work out, he was still nasty, still garnered monolithic respect, still had his trade get the most attention in recent years because of said skill (more than Shaq, Kidd, Gasol, shit the closest thing was Shaq to the Heat in recent years). Understand one thing: the Celtics are not acquiring the veteran, high salaried Garnett AND Allen in addition to Pierce to create some all star studded nucleus for years to come. They want to win now. This year or next. Short sighted? yes. Boning themselves in the long run if they don't win? Absolutely. But they know that this team gives them the best chance to do so. And in this league, with their history, a single Celtics win will be worth a few years of salary cap penalties and severe roster changes. Tell me how any of this mentality relates to Garnett on a personal level at all? Hes not 20. He wants a ring. He knows the best chance he has to get it is with these Celtics, he knew it before signing, thats why he was hesitant until RayRay signed.
