What would be a good laptop, like a little for gaming, a little for school? And a little bit of everything else? basically well rounded

I'd suggest focusing more on school for your laptop needs based on the thread title.
i'm not looking on pure gaming laptop ><
I actually own that laptop :rocl:Originally Posted by Howard Roark
And @ OP, Alienware is a great dual purpose machine, and they're amazingly cheaper than the Dell XPS models of the same quality. However, if you're looking for something that's moble and can play games, I suggest getting a Macbook Pro. They have insane battery life, and coupled with the fact they can dual boot OSX and Windows, you have a great all around machine, and have a good workhorse for any editing you need to do. Also, casing gets messed up too easy on my laptop, when I get it serviced i'm going to get the case replaced and a bag from alienware so I don't fuck up my laptop anymore, however, it is nice playing HL2 at 100+ FPS.
but how much did you spend on your laptopOriginally Posted by Korietsu

i'm glad to see everyone is taking this seriously ._.
You're not going to get very good advice with such a vague OP. What kind of games do you plan on playing? Are you going to be bring it to class/carrying it around a lot? Are you going to be doing any intensive work like video/sound editing? How much are you looking to spend? etc...
$2500 after shipping and taxes. Base model XPS at the time was 2500 for the same parts, pre tax/shipping. Its going to last for a long while, however, word of warning, Alienware CS department is a bit slacking, but better than say compaq. However, you could go for a light model, or I would suggest a Lenovo laptop.Originally Posted by Vandole
You need to list more priorities. How much can you spend? Will you need this to actually be portable or did you just want a computer that takes up less space in your room? What software do you need to run on it that aren't games?
Otherwise people are just going to name their favorite brands. Dell laptops are horrible, and I don't really think Alienware are going to be much better if you're looking to fit under some kind of budget.
Quoted for emphasis seriously last time I looked there were like 3 or 4 regular topics on laptop purchasing AND a sticky about ideas.Originally Posted by Shuemue
No shit, there's a fucking wealth of professional advice there. Then again, OP isn't known for his intellect.Originally Posted by zoobernut

I have an older model of Dell. The Dell Inspiron 9300: I been using it for 3 years now and it work fine for me. I use it for school, programming, and the likes. Also i have it multi. boot Solaris 10 and windows XP and works fine. What I am basically saying is Inspiron series is a good option.
I'd also recommend Mac Book Pro.
Great power. Decent Price(for it's range anyways).
Lightest in it's power category(or close if anything lighters been released since)
And amazing battery life(in MacOS).
When my main PC broke down and I didn't feel like fixing it for awhile I used my MacBook pro as my gaming machine and it worked out just fine(I ran 3 instances of FFXI without issue on it often as well).
I've had close to 20 laptops in my life-time and the MBP has far and away been the best one in terms of size/functionality/power.
I'm just going to quote this because it's pretty good advice. If you're looking to spend in the $1500-2K range, you can pick up a decent MacBook, which are great reliable machines, same thing goes for any Lenovo or light weight Sony Viao laptop. They're also much more portable than the XPS/Alienware laptops, which have terribad battery life(~1.5H for me with average settings). However, the lenovo/mac books are much more portable and some of them with the correct settings get up to 5 hours of battery life.Originally Posted by Correction
If you're looking for something that can do hardcore gaming, go ahead and spend $2500 or more on the alienware/XPS. I did because I know I won't be getting another PC for quite a long time, and I cant afford to keep a desktop at my apartment especially with limited space.
All around i was thinking about getting a Vaio? Sony VAIO VGN-CR320E/W 14.1" Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) White
