However, what can't be argued, is that FFXI has more variety, in terms of what to do at end-game. WoW has different bosses with different strats required for each, but odds are, you're only running the same instance night after night for months on end. I got damn sick of running Kara over and over and over. 6 months later, now sick of running Tempest keep and SSC. I got sick of running Alterac Valley over and over and over. Those were my choices logging in each night: TK, SSC, or AV.
While you may be running the same FFXI things over and over, there are 2 things that mitigate it: One, that there is vastly more things you can do, which means you're not doing the same thing night after night; helps break up the monotony. And Two, you can bring any job you have leveled, thus you're not playing the same role all the time. Again, variety. Sure, some jobs will be better than others at certain events, but they can be cleared with less than an optimal setup. You may be a lolpup, but the event is still doable. Ret pally in WoW? Sorry, no room for you.
Also the fact that all your jobs/classes can make use of gear you obtain. If you decide you want to play a different job/class for variety and fun, you don't have to re-aquire gear that you already got.
This is probably the #1 reason why FFXI wins for me.
If I level a rogue and a warrior in WoW, and I want a rare trinket(like a tsunami talisman) drop off a boss for both of them, I need two. In FFXI, I only need 1. The job change system edges out everything else.
