    Holographic Storage! - InPhase's 300GB Holographic Media.

Was just surfing around the net and managed to pick up this gem.

    http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=313

Even since astronaut Frank Bowman disconnected the HAL 9000’s holographic memory in 2001: A Space Odyssey techies have been wondering when we could buy real holographic storage. Now we know: May, 2008.

Promising super-high density and excellent media flaw resistance, holographic storage has been an ever-receeding technology for years. You can buy nifty 3D skull and crossbones holograms - technically a form of storage - but no one had figured out how to turn a lab project into a product. Until now.

Which gets us to InPhase’s target market: archiving. That’s why they were showing at NAB.

They’ve spec’d the optical media they use - a 5.25? clear disk in a cartridge - at 50 years. For film and video companies whose data is literally irreplaceable a stable, compact and random access medium is a no-brainer.
Well, this looks promising, and if they can pioneer the tech to be cheaper and smaller, we'll be seeing lots of cool shit in the next few years. It's currently priced at $18,000 for the drive, and $180 for the 300GB disks.

Interesting. I probably wouldn't invest in this right away because first gen stuff is always going to be glitchy especially something like this ebing mass produced.

I've been hearing about the high capacity disks for a while now, this is the first I've seen of such R&D.

I could be wrong, but with this type of data storage, wouldn't any physical blemish on the surface severely fuck it up?

I skimmed over the article a number of times, I see nothing regarding durability and issues with surface blemishes besides the fact that, in the IMAGE, they look like they are stored in a cartridge (like Sony's UMD).

This probably won't be consumer ready for years anyway. Looks like they're targetting archival services to recoup the R&D costs first. This is meant to replace tape backup, not DVD-Rs or burnable Blu-ray discs.

Also not fond of the size of the media. If they've standardized on something the shape and size of disks from 1975 I'll happily keep my DVD spindle full of pirated movies and anime for the next 10 or more years. I have very little in storage that I'd like to keep around for 50 years, anyway.
