We can test this with Obi + SCH's weather effect spell.

I assume that this one is thuder-based aoe. So Byakko H. + Barthundra should have some significant result, maybe ?

Main WHM in my group swears by Barthundra for chariots. I don't know if it makes a difference or not though, I'm just there to smack it with a big axe.

I'd just as soon curaga 2 as deal with running in, risking para or bind, for some barthundra that may or may not be helping.

There is time enough between TP moves to run in and cast Barthundara and run out, if you run in directly after a TP move.

Summoner test is usually the most accurate, e.g. the Lv1 dark spirit resisting Cursed Sphere.

Briault + Barmerit makes the answer relevant whether you can manage a resist build or not, right?

Unless its light or dark and then we're fugged. :[

No, barspell merits/briault is more accurate when you otherwise take predictable damage, because they have the effect of lowering the unresisted damage of attacks whose element matches that of the bar-spell active on you. For instance, if you consistently take 300 damage from something, but barfire with briault--and only barfire among the barspells--reduces that to 285, then you know with certainty that it is fire-based damage.
