    Re: Connectivity Issue

No shit, your router has a firewall? I never would have known!

Seriously though, I'm aware that you don't need a firewall or anti-virus, but I just think it's retarded to not supplement your security with one. Especially if you do a lot of sensitive work on your computer that involves your identity or anything else that you wish to keep private. Yes, YOU are the best defense against viruses and spyware, but YOU are also human and prone to make a mistake every once in awhile. Most virus scanners are either cheap or free, the same with firewalls. Many don't even take up system resources, so what's the reason for not having one? It's quite arrogant to think you are the be-all end-all solution to security and that in your years of browsing the internet you will never ever click on a bad link, or download something out of error, or visit a spoofed website, or any other of the multitude of ways there are for something to infect your computer. Not to mention how no amount of "smart browsing" will help you if someone else on your network gets infected with something.

Also, lol@at the "I've never gotten a virus therefore I don't need anti-virus" line of reasoning. I suppose you don't have insurance on your house either? Or wear a seatbelt in the car? Of course you do, and while getting a virus can't compare to losing your home or your life, the reason is the same: to protect yourself in case something out of your control happens.

We can debate this until we're blue in the face, but I still maintain that I'm surprised about how many people do not feel the need to use even the simplest of AV/AS/Firewalls. It's your data and your identify, you can choose to protect yourself (or not) as you wish. It's not a sign of weakness, it's not being "babied", and it requires no sacrifice on your part or your systems part to have one around. Flame away!

Hmmm. So it stopped doing the whole "zomg internetz not working" thing now. The last thing I had done was reset my router's default config. Not sure what could have lent itself to do that, but I'm glad it's resolved.
