They take it to a civil court because their lawyers (SE's) basically say, "You are going to pay us this much in restitution, or we will **** you straight up the ass in court"

So, the case is settled quite promptly as the person who is going to get it up the ass realizes what kind of **** they are in.

For the most part, they just point them at people. Proportionately speaking, not many armed criminals actually end up shooting anybody.

Is comparing Taj to a Murderer kind of like Godwin's Law?

Basically they got pissed off about how they had a guy showing them software bugs/exploits that if found by somebody else could have caused a bigger shitstorm than the whole accounts hacked by rmt while SE does jack shit fiasco we're in currently without getting paid anything and even volunteering said info without releasing the methods to the public.

Imagine if rmt had found the bugs taj showed them and considering the effort they put into those keyloggers they've been been working hard enough to have found them. Rmt steals 500 accounts per day using SE and it's own system? the keyloggers were mostly stopped by the players protecting themselves with firefox adblock and manually searching for them. the friendlist exploit had a higher capacity for misuse by rmt and nothing short of SE fixing it could have protected anyone. We've seen SE and thier ability to notice anything and the even longer time it takes to respond. people on ps2/xbox would have lost thier accounts while customer support and Gm's claimed that the ps2/xbox people must have checked out unsafe sites or downloaded bots which stole thier PW, or used a 3rd pt controller made in china which obviously must be the problem, or give everyone the runaround and tell us to call the police.
While i dont worship taj i do see the potentially worse disasters that would have occured if he had not given the info he did to SE.

cue 20 years later(the usual SE response time to anything) when they decide to prosecute a person for hacking into accounts and everyone mysteriously cant legally ask about taj or say if it is or not.
I think that if taj was more well known outside of BG this would have backfired for SE pretty bad.

EDIT: this is purely theoretical of course. after all we arent allowed to talk of taj and say SE prosecuted him(whther or not it is true) because SE is now threatening BG or something blah blah. It's purely a coincidence that taj disappeared just around the estimated time SE would have prosecuted the villainous hacker that might have taken less control of not even 1 tenth of the keyloggers that SE is ,has, and probably will still continue to blatantly ignore.
I really hope that's vague enough for me to not get hit with the banhammer..

Recently, we became aware of an individual who attempted to compromise the integrity of the FINAL FANTASY XI service. The individual's efforts exploited the low-security passwords chosen by a small percentage of our customers. We would like to assure our users that our PlayOnline team quickly responded with countermeasures against the attacks from this individual. Additionally, our legal team worked together with U.S. government authorities to identify and locate the individual. As a result of our investigation, we have now completed an out of court confidential civil settlement which has serious financial consequences for this person.
What a boring outcome. It'd be much better to have read that someone was jailed. ...And since when was haxing for civil cases and not for criminal courts? This is like if someone gets shot, the shooter tosses them $100k, and magically charges disappear? That would be... interesting justice.

On an related note, would someone like to take a shot at me for $100k? I'd love to take a few years off. ...Just no shots to the head or heart to minimize risk of death.
Murder has both civil & criminal penalties. Criminal charges are what the government brings against you, civil charges are what some other person brings. Don't need to have one or the other. Government could toss a murder in jail for his life and then the family of the victory could bring a civil case for wrongful death and clean his finances dry.

Just look at OJ, found not-guilty on the criminal charges yet still wound up having a civil judgment against him regardless.

I'm sure hacking stuff easily fits into both as well, whether the state felt like prosecuting someone for it is another matter. Still easy enough to just bring a civil suit against them though.

sorry my mistake. i simply assumed that since he's reported at least 1 and maybe other hacks to GM's (aka the DC anyone you want to bug)that he had reported that one as well.
