I've had RDM melee work on Greater Colibri in one party: we were RDM BRD PLD THFx3. RDM kept 5 people hasted and 2 refreshed, and they and the PLD had no trouble keeping everyone cured up with just Refresh.
I wouldn't try this on anything but Colibri, though.

Everytime I see a rdm post 25 meleeing (in a party), I die a little on the inside.

Because, I mean, your main PT RDM isn't supposed to nuke at Fafhogg, right? Silly me, I guess I just did it wrong every single time and I shouldn't have used my extra MP to do ~85% unresisted nukes. Oops!
I can think of a billion examples involving things I've done, or my friends have done, that would contradict your large, sweeping statements that generalize things as bad ideas and should not be done... you're refusing to understand that there are people that actually know how to do them, know what they need to be able to do them, and when they can actually attempt to try them. I know this is a 'newbie advice' forum, but please, do not give people the wrong ideas with your statements that refuse to look past what you think are the boundaries of the game.
Any competent RDM can survive that shit.Originally Posted by gandorf
Anyways, back in the glory days I'd melee, not always since it'd depend on the pt and camp. It was a real bitch to keep up though, my performance would deteriorate really fast. Then I just would solo duo with friends, fuk refreshing and hasting ;o
Back before CoP I used to melee RDM, then again I was in a static with a THF, and RNG. I would haste and enfeeble easily enough, and always be there for the TA when the RNG pulled hate. Setups with friends are always an exception to PUG behavior.
Except that one time I was invited to G.Colibri on whm and there was a RDM and 4 other DD. I asked and was allowed to melee. Between haste, regen III, refresh and the occasionaly cure III I could get several hexa strikes off before needing to rest for mp. I felt it was much more usefull then standing there just buffing.
In a merit situation, if the rdm has time to melee; why are they not pulling and stacking slept mobs?

The first line in my bazaar comment is
If you're a Melee RDM /tell me.
There has never been a second tell.
The topic says RDM DD, but people seem to have mainly focused on lolmelee rdm. When played right and in an ideal pt RDM DD using spells is viable.
Back in the day i level'd blm first to 75 then rdm, so i had access to +elem skill gear and elem merits. As soon as i could equip staves, i stacked as much +elem skill gear as i could possibly do (things like shaman's cloak early and druids slop/AF later on with elem earring to boot). As mobs approached the level where resists were less common, my damage was pretty good. With pld and brd, i didn't have to focus on curing as much, and thus i even subbed /smn once in awhile (static pt ftw). This was only about levels 51 > 65ish. The dmg was actually decent to pretty good depending on resists. Then i ditched the pt at 66 and leeched to 75 in lolsky merit pts.

I did 10-35 in party, and soloed last 2 level on pet. My gears was pretty average (not like there is anything awesome), but I had merit to make up for it. I outdamaged almost ever melee except a few good war and mnk in the last 2-3 levels. If you take in consideration the healing, debuff and tp, tanking, it's a pretty awesome jobs.
But yeah, like Maxx said, efficiency is starting to drop at those level, and when you add refresh/haste, I'm certain rdm is better sitting with mage.
