Keyboard LCD display programming

For keyboards with an LCD display, like the G15 or my laptop, is there any way to program it to display something you want? An example in any language is fine, or a link to an API or some other utility. Or is it specific to the keyboard, with no set standard?

It'd be kind of neat to take advantage of it when writing a program.

But what about non-G15 LCD keyboards? Would the same info found there apply? Is it a standard across keyboards?
