    BRB quitting FFXI.

Also, do you not own axes? A great-axe? A sword or a pair!?

WAR tanking, the complex mistress it is, is only ever going to hold hate through damage, not through voke -> nothing but taking damage for 30 seconds -> voke again -> get cure bombed some more, but don't you worry, me, my jerk-bag opinion, and my ridill that sits in storage and is completely rotting (yes, I'm playing /that/ card) will go quit FFXI, heaven forbid somebody actually be straight-forward with you and tell you that you're being retarded.

Ask me for my opinion any time man though, really, I live to be helpful, and when getting cure IV spammed by a RDM, who then takes hate and proceeds to tank better than you can ever with a staff, don't look too surprised.

Sath, you're underestimating tanking defensively as War/Nin or you're just trying to get the Evil to gtfo, not really sure which. If your not used it tanking getting a claw cyclone directly to the face bloody hurts having 20-25% phys dam down is nice when you and your support is new to the concept of tanking gods. If you have a ton enmity and a decent haste build you should easily be able to hold hate off most DDs and healers as long as they aren't going crazy. Most god fights don't even last long enough to make CE a big issue and War can stay at the top of VE easily. I realize you want to bitch out the newb for posting in the wrong forum. The thing is tanking gods defensively is perfectly viable just obviously not the fastest but for a newb who's probably rarely DD tanked he'd probably be killing himself going out there in full DD gear and zerk up.

tanked so much crap on war i couldnt name it all probably the most fun i have in the game but its a lot easier to go w/ 2 brds and an extra war or 2 and just bounce hate than going back to the 2004 times. I wanted to tank like that to but realized you dont need that stuff to tank and you hold hate much better if ur doing a lot of dmg.

Edit: still kinda sounding like sath there but trying to go about it in a nicer way lol

Re: Warrior Tank set-up equipment build. can i have it please?

KV only draws in when using Weapon Skill. It's usually Draw In >> AoE WS > Single Target Strong WS. If you hold it with DRK/NINs spamming Absorb TP, you can kite it just fine without draw ins. KV also has a sort of CE decay so it's not like a normal mob.

Your problem with WAR tanking is not going to be gear and merits I think. WAR has access to a great number of different gear setups. The issue is the entire concept of CE vs. VE vs. TE generation. WAR has no moves that generate CE and must rely on the sub choice to do this. You have really 2 options at this point...

    1) Sub NIN, which still gives you very few CE generation moves (other than damage)

    2) Sub a high CE generation sub, and forgo shadows, which causes you to get hit and lose CE.

Now if you just want to tank gods, you can do so quite easily. You can generate your CE through SATA. We used to WAR tank these gods back in like 2005 and it was fine, even with average support (just used a lot of BLMs which were DD but doubled for stun). On harder things where you cannot rely on SATA for CE generation, you will have significant problems as the fight drags along - mages which generate a lot of CE like BRD will eventually cap at 10,000 CE. At this point, it will become impossible for you to hold hate over them without them taking hits.

Kiting is also an issue as others have mentioned. WAR is one of the few jobs which still does not have access to movement speed gear. In a situation like this, I don't see what a WAR/NIN could offer that even a simple NIN/WAR couldn't do much better.

Overall, I think your questions about this thread are valid in that if you are low on members, doesn't hurt to make your WAR a 'back-up' tank, especially if you're just focused on sky (where just about anything works... even BLM/NINs tank Byakko for kicks). But, I would probably stick to sky and lower end HNMs for this.

WAR tanking is not optimal, but it does work - especially in easier things like sky. You could indeed get better results with your standard tanking schemes, but WAR can still work if that's all you got. If you're doing this to try to fill holes I think this is a very valid question; on the other hand, if you're doing this on some quest to "prove" WAR tanking is great and on par with the other accepted tanks, I think it's not.

Re: Warrior Tank set-up equipment build. can i have it please?

I used to staff tank on NIN, back in the glory days, I understand it, but you can also tank in semi-normal gear and hit a macro to put on your staff / jelly ring / boxers / whatever you like in preperation for moves like Claw Cyclone (which has a huge charge time) or even for any ga3's.

Honestly, in this day and age, unless the DD's are on the same level as the newb WAR, and are unmerited, they should be pulling hate off somebody who isn't tanking with something other than provoke, if the fights aren't lasting long it's because the damage output is high and Provoke really isn't that big of a deal (I know this because NIN/WAR in full arhats +1 and Estaff I still couldn't tank over good DD's in sky) unless he's eating wave after wave of TA WS, which I'll admit is an option.

The mind-set of sticking to 1 set of gear and expecting to play your job at anything other than a dunes level to me is terrible, if you aren't accommodating for the different situations (a stun-locked byakko is not going to hurt you much for example) and DDing appropriately, then you might as well level PLD, throw on an Estaff, and hitch a ride back to 2005 with Aerial Armor rotations.

I still to this day remember the first time I put on my haub, ate some sushi, and tanked a god with my katanas instead of ye olde Estaff, and I got my ass kicked. I also remember the second time I tried it, when even before my windower macros, and even when it really wasn't acceptable in a mages eyes to blink gear at all, that I swapped gear in for 'oh shit' and how much smoother it went (EVA for ichi and DEF for oh shit)

I could be nicer, I really could, but the 'IF YOU DONT AGREE WITH ME YOU CAN JUST GET OUT WAH WAH WAHHHHHHH' shit is ridiculous, and given the opportunity, I would recommend chemical castration.

There ya go, you could just save yourself the time of explaining yourself and tell him to fuck off. XD

My thoughts were this guy can't even figure what gear to use so he's unlikely to be proficient enough to macro in oh shit gear in time. Guess I'm just in a bit better mood atm. Usually I don't like to help people who haven't done like 2 mins of research themselves.

Re: Warrior Tank set-up equipment build. can i have it please?

    13kb's of redundant!

    Haste

    Main: Rune Chopper
    Sub: Spear Strap/What ever
    Range:
    Ammo: Fire Bomblet
    Head: Askar/Walahra Turban
    Neck: PCC/Fortitude
    Ear1: Brutal Earring
    Ear2: Hades+1/Fowling/Loquacious
    Body: Haub(+1)
    Hands: Askar/Dusk Gloves(+1)
    Ring1/2: Toreador’s/Divisor’s/Ulthalam/Woodsman’s.
    Back: Cerberus
    Waist: Speed/Swift
    Legs: Byakko’s Haidate
    Feet: Dusk(+1)/Amir/Askar

    Food: Sole/Dorado Sushi
    Buffs: Refresh, Haste, & March.

    Defensive

    Main: Terra Staff
    Sub: Axe Grip
    Range: What ever
    Sub: What ever
    Head: Darksteel Cap+1/Genbu’s Kabuto
    Neck: Ritter/Parrying Torque
    Ear1/2: Pigeon+1/Bloodbead
    Body: Darksteel Harness+1
    Hands: Darksteel Mittens+1/Seiryu’s Kote
    Ring1/2: Jelly/BQ
    Back: Resentment/Gigant/Lamia+1
    Waist: Relic/Trance Belt/RSE/Marid
    Legs: Darksteel Subligar+1
    Feet: Askar/Darksteel Leggings+1

Use one full time MP piece or 1 MP merit. Pick feet based on haste/acc attained through other pieces of equip. Don't go overboard on haste since it caps at 25%, but don't go for anything less than capped. Keep one stun ready for Ichi recasts, and macro in a defensive set if your timers get screwed. You'll need to spam ichi debuffs on Genbu with some enmity gear to hold hate, I'm not too sure about the others.

You'll want to full time the defensive get up on Byakko unless you & your support are both used to your tanking. You'll also need at least 1-2 dedicated TAWS DD’s for him, assuming you for some reason aren't getting them on all the other gods.

For Faust, wear the defensive set minus staff. Swap to WS gear & WS every time you hit 100%, you should be able to generate a decent amount of hate. Make sure your DD's do the bulk of their damage right after you voke/WS though, or they'll start pulling hate as you lose it. Expect it to be a long drawn out fight if you don't have a lot of ranged DD.

Alternatively, you could '05 staff it & sub PLD for flash/sentinel/cure's. No idea how well it would work, but it's hard to do worse than WAR/NIN on Faust.

You should be swapping more gear than that for every fight, but don't worry too much about it until you can actually kill the NM's without much trouble.

    Kiting

    Main: Terra Staff
    Sub: Axe Grip
    Range: Lamian Kaman+1/Rosenbogen
    Ammo:
    Head: Walahra Turban
    Neck: Harmonia’s Torque
    Ear1/2: Hades+1/Loquacious/Pigeon+1/Bloodbead
    Body: Fighter’s Lorica(+1)
    Hands: Askar/Fighter’s(+1)
    Ring1/2: BQ/Hercule’s
    Back: Cerberus/Resentment
    Waist: Trance Belt
    Legs: Byakko’s Haidate/Fighter’s(+1)
    Feet: Askar/Fighter’s(+1)/Desert Boots(KV)

Sub DRK & pretend you're a NIN with provoke when kiting Kirin/KB. They don't really do much melee damage, and you probably won't hold hate on either of them if you don't /DRK. KV is obviously a different story, use what ever your holding party needs.

That's probably what I'd say if my WAR was 75 anyways; the closest I've ever come to end game WAR tanking was NIN/WAR. I recommend just leveling NIN or PLD to 75 to get better results for the effort you put in.

Also, stop talking like you're using the auto-translator.

    How to kite on War.

Wait til you feel like someone else almost has hate established, and preferably a Thf or /Thf is readying a complex dance/gangbang with the mob and a couple other dudes.

Make sure you have either 200% TP and Mbhuj, or 300% TP and a high damage Gaxe.

Throw every fucking buff you have up, yes, even your 2hr, then Warrior's Charge, and land the biggest Steel Cyclone you can.

Now run, run like the wind, run like your name is Jamal and you just stumbled into a Bar in Southern Mississippi to see a Confederate Flag, a bunch of doods in white sheets, and a banjo twanging in the background.

Make sure you aren't running in Dusk gear, and completely ignore ANYONE who says to stop so they can cure you, it's a trick!

You're not trying to stand there and be cured, YOU'RE KITING MAN!
