    Peace Corps

So, I'm graduating college in 2 weeks and really don't know what direction I want my life to go in. I have a lot of options but still am not certain on anything. A friend of mine from work today told me he joined the Peace Corps and is shipping out for Paraguay in a few days, and I looked it up and it sounds like awesome.

Anyone have any experience with this or know someone that has? Insight, etc etc...

Dude, what happened to culinary school in Austin, TX? Don't give up on the dream!

I know a few people who joined the Peace Corp...they came back with some nasty illnesses. Might want to consider that.

That school in Texas was a 40,000$ waste of a money. The company that owns them is getting their asses sued off right now because their diplomas aren't worth anything. People are actually getting turned down jobs because the education from their systems was so bad. Needless to say, I got the hell out of there.

Cooking is still a good possibility, but I still have so many options, and I need to explore them while I have a chance.

The Peace Corps always struck me as something people resort to out of pure desperation, not unlike the Army. I'd rather work temp/part-time jobs, even with a degree, than do either, once I sat down and rethought my situation enough. Getting shipped off to Africa to catch god-knows-what disease is...unappealing.

It's really not about a lack or money that I'd be doing it. Hell, I can expect an insane graduation gift from my rich grandparents when I graduate. It'd mainly be because it does open up a lot of doors in things I would consider going into and maybe help me figure out what I really want to do with my life.

And while yes, there are a lot of options in Africa, my background skills would be much more beneficial in other areas (I'd try for South America probably). They also try to place you where you want to go...

temp/part-time jobs don't let you get far away and experience a different way of living/different culture. Plus there's the humanitarian aspect of it that's appealing to some. tbh if I don't end up with anything remotely promising within half a year of graduating, I might consider it myself (as long as I'd have like, electrical access to keep developing a portfolio in spare time). My step-cousin was real close to shipping off but decided that her career was going too well to interrupt for a year at the time.

I think the program guarantees that you have access to things like internet no matter where you end up going. Might not be something you can be on all the time, but it's there.

Unless you're going for a job in politics or as a translator 'experience in a foreign culture' means fuck-all on a resume. What's worse is having a year+ span in your CV that has potentially little or nothing to do with what a prospective employer is looking for. The classic mistake made by a young globe-trotter is assuming people back home are going to be more interested in their experiences than reality has in store for them.

...maybe you aren't doing it to build a resume in your specific field? (hence why I mentioned the electrical access in my case)

Maybe you just want to help people out and learn some new things :/

I know, I mean it's such a strange thought isn't it? Also if I went and got to South America I'd hopefully come back fluent in spanish...which would damn sure help.

I'm just warning of the reality of coming home after it's all over. Postponing finding gainful employment in a recession is not the move I'd make.

Makes sense, however there are people like me that want to go into some kind of industry with helping or serving people. Such as cooking (yes I know this trip would not help with that...except the learning spanish part), teaching, or getting a paid position at the red cross. Peace Corps would definitely help the last two.

I'm not 100% sure of how the peace corps works, but if they make you sign a contract that makes you serve for x amount of years, fuck that. Always leave yourself a way out in case you change your mind.

    Re: Peace Corps

don't do the peace corps. i bet you're thin, scraggly, not shaven, etc. i met a couple of people who have just finished their tour in the peace corps and hated the food/housing. they also told me it's like being homeless, except you feel better helping people for the first month, then it's a job that gives no benefits. do you really want this?
