    Short Term Memory loss

Alright well this post is about my dad and some odd patterns I have been noticing recently. Recently he's been acting strange, he forgets things that before he would always remember.

For instance I was talking to him on the phone about when I was going to see him, but then he phoned just less than an hour later asking when I was coming to see him. Another example is I was playing FF and my dad walks into the den and asks why I'm not studying for my exams. I had my exams back at the start of April (he remembered this very clearly not even a week ago). He yelled at me for wasting our money on tuition and such for me being lazy (I had a job interview not even 8 hours before this, and got the job).

If these were isolated incidents I wouldn't pay them any mind, but in the last 3 days I've seen him very obvious changes have been happening and its worrying me. I'm a little concerned it could be Alzhiemers as he is getting around that age(62) and we don't really know his family history (adopted). Does anyone have any experiences with situations like this, or know of some ways that I can convince him to see a doctor about it?

kinda odd that it is such a drastic turn, he might just be fucking with you my dad does it all the time. my grandmother had alzheimers, just tell him you are worried about it and want him to see a doctor to have it checked, not much else you can do.

Start hiding the TV remote, and his keys. Eventually he'll realize he's senile (even if he's not) and you can use it as an excuse to get out of shit.

Honestly, I have that same problem too. I forget little things like stuff I'm supposed to do that I'd normally remember. Then again.. I remember phone numbers, addresses, middle names to people I hardly know and specific shit like that, so I dunno really. D:

On your topic, do what above poster said. Tell him you're worried (but don't make it sound gay or anything) and that he should get it checked out.

Is your mom still alive and are they still married / do they still talk to each other? If yes to both, have her do it. Or better yet, just tell her and if she's anything like my mom your dad will have the Dr's appointment / tests without even knowing why he's there.

God I miss being around my parents sometimes. Evil overlord got nothing on nice mom's as far as "I'm doing this and I don't know why" goes.

Or "It's in your best interest to do this." "It's for your own good." Oh god, how I don't miss that.

    and not really true.

anterograde amnesia is the loss of memory's after an injury that caused the amnesia, where-as retrograde amnesia is the loss of memory prior to a specific event or injury.

So if i were to get in a car accident and bump my head, if i had anterograde amnesia i'd be able to remember everything that happened before the accident and nothing after, like patient HM or guy pierce in the movie. Retrograde is the opposite, if i got in an accident i could remember everything since the accident, but not before. These two types of amnesia are unrelated to other normal types of memory loss due to natural aging and brain deterioration or other ailments not resulting from injury.

he didn't specifiy any event or injury that triggered his memory loss so it's not amnesia, it's just him getting older and experiencing natural brain deterioration that results in lesser memory capacity. Depending on his age 45+ and if it's in your family possibly heading towards alzheimers or just good old fashioned demensia.

either way, have it get checked out so you know. There are lots of ailments that can cause memory impairment so it's good to pinpoint so you know it's not one of the more serious ones.

Short term memory loss is one of the first signs of Alzheimers onset. Definitely something to be checked out, though unfortunately there isn't a whole lot to be done.

This kind of case sometimes will appeared on those who getting older and older. I have forgotten where we able to find the info about this thing. But it is better to get a way to let him go for a doctor check. So that (at least) he will listen to doctor advice... or you can tell him to write down in a memo whatever he need to remember, instead just remember it only.

and yes this is not a good sign, and don't let your father going out alone, seriously. Some day he might forget how to get back home or where is the home, and its happened alots in this kind of cases.

yea my grandmother had alzheimers she stopped driving when I was little because she'd forget how to get back home, and I remember once she went out gardening (something she loved to do) and forgot where she was, then she degenerated into a childlike state for a long time until she really couldn't do anything but sleep and eat in her final years, damn I made myself sad.

I had to think for a long while about this topic before I posted... but my grandfather also suffers from Alzheimer's, and it's downright depressing... he knows multiple languages but instead of speaking Spanish he often rambles off in French. They literally lose their minds. Furthermore... I think in this thread the phrase "so funny I forgot to laugh" qualifies.

My grandfather seriously does have Alzheimer's though... and it is quite the fucked up disease... one minute he's saying hello the next he doesn't recognize you. It's really shocking how it works.
