Where to open/save from a Mini SD?

Where would you open or save files to a Mini SD? My laptop has a slot for them, but I have no idea where to actually get into the storage. Trying to help a friend get music onto his cell phone, but I don't know what his phone is to try searching for it that way.

If your laptop has a slot it should come up as an external storage drive. Slip it in and check my computer for new drives listed.

I had to use an adapter because I didn't have his phone's disks but had a smaller one from my digital camera. Not sure why it didn't work (otherwise wouldn't have asked ), but I had another disk laying around for whatever reason and it worked.
