    Re: Buying a new TV.

My 50' Hitachi Plasma lagged like crazy when I played Halo 3 on it. I switched over to my room TV a 32' VIZIO LCD and experience very minimal to no lag and it really helped my game play as you could imagine. I got as low a 25 in team slayer on the Plasma but when I switched over I got back up to a 40 in no time at all and I was putting up huge numbers immediately after switching, so i know it was not any newly found skill. So LCD won me over for what type of TV to game on.

However, the picture on the Plasma blows my Vizio out of the water obviously. I just wouldnt recommend a large Plasma for gaming the lag was extremely frustrating.

    Re: Buying a new TV.

You can't "turn off" 120Hz on a TV. The refresh rate will be the same no matter what. What's you're actually turning off is the interpolation done by the TV between your standard frames. Different manufacturers will use different algorithms, but the general effect is the same. Without Automotion/Motionflow/etc enabled the TV will simply redisplay the same frame multiple times e.g. a frame will be repeated 5 times for 24fps @120Hz. Those different processing algorithms will instead create transition frames that are slightly different than the key frames read from the actual media or broadcast. This can result in smoother looking video, but it does sometimes lend a "fake" look. The post-processing involved also tends to lag when it comes to things like video games where split-second reactions are important. When playing games it's generally a good idea to disable any post-processing features to get the best results.

Regarding the merits of 120Hz in general, if you're someone who spends a lot of time in front of a TV or monitor, you will easily be able to tell the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz. Lower refresh rates tend to have more flicker. Though not noticeable outright, it is there and can cause eye strain. Work in front of a computer 8 hours a day and you'll know what I mean. Having a display with a higher refresh rate will reduce the amount of flicker thus easing the strain on your eyes.

Just food for thought, you get a 1080p projector setup (projector/screen/mounting bracket/long arse hdmi cable) within that price range with image diagonal of 85-115"

    I reccommend browsing through: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/

Great forum for comp/tv/sounds system software and products.

Make sure you budget right. Don't use all of your home theater budget just on a TV. Would be a shame if you bought a kickin TV without being able to take full advantage of it. For games, this means a PS3 or Xbox 360, for TV this means HD satellite (might need to buy a new HD dish if you don't have one), and for a PC this might require you to upgrade too. And don't forget the budget for a proper sound system.

You will also spend some coin on a good TV stand. I bought this one from Best Buy and it's really awesome. The shelfs are really deep and look great. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1138085296252

And if you are looking for a part time job then working at Best Buy is definitely the way to go. It will save you hundreds. My buddy did it and was kind enough to let me bum off his discount. That TV stand I bought is normally $300 but I got it for like $80 or something.

Is this a good TV? http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productD ... merRatings

My cousin wants to get a TV and I have no idea which is a good one since there are like so many. He only gonna use it to watch TV, movies and a little bit of gaming. His budget is around ~$1,000. Any recommendation? Thank you!

Wait for Memorial Day weekend, always big sales. I know Vann's has a bunch planned (18 mo. no interest financing for purchases that weekend too).
