This is the worst news I've heard in a long time. It makes me sad just reading about it, looking at the photos makes me tear up.
Theres been earthquakes in chinas past that have killed hundreds of thousands. I was watching some history channel thing and i think it was a flood that killed millions, its all in where it hits. Just because they have a billion people doesn't mean the whole country is populated, China has a pretty big desert in the north iirc, if one hit there who cares. Also even china has its big cities with relatively sturdier buildings(like in san francisco, all the new buildings there are built for earthquakes), from what i can deduce this earthquake hit the smaller cities and they just couldnt take it, that along with the 3min or so that it lasted caused major destruction.Originally Posted by Atlasion
Hurricanes with 10ft storm surges hit the NC coast every single year(it seems like it at least) and there is massive flooding...every year, but there is no new orleans on the NC coast so you dont hear about it. Also we dont build out cities right under a gigantic lake >.> but thats another story.
The media really picks and chooses its disasters to cover, and i really don't know what the selection process is like but it seems kinda odd, whichever gets more ratings i guess. Also today and tomorrow will be dominated with election coverageidk why thought because its basically over, but ive been watching ccn for the past hour and they mentioned china like once, kinda mad about that.
this just in: wildfires in florida
# NEW: More than 18,000 buried under rubble, death toll passes 12,000
# NEW: China welcomes foreign aid, not workers because of transport issues
# Province hit by nearly 30 seismic aftershock jolts 24 hours after quake

An earthquake survivor at a hospital in Chengdu, in southwest China's Sichuan province, on May 13.
Facts:
* Mianyang City: 7,395 people killed; 18,645 trapped in debris.
* Mianzhu: 2,000 dead; 10,000 injured; at least 4,800 trapped.
* Shifang: 600 dead; 2,300 trapped.
* Chengdu: 959 dead in provincial capital.
* Guangyuan City: 700 dead.
* Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture: 161 dead.
* Unconfirmed casualties reported in Ya'an, Ziyang and Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
I didn't focus much on the jokes, but what I saw was jokes about numbers. Death happens and is natural. Joking about death isn't insensitive, but joking about those who have survived and are suffering is.
When did apathy become so fashionable?
It is kind of interesting how this will distract attention from Tibet and the olympics protests.
Normally disagree with you on your principals, but on this bolded statement, I'll just disagree with you based on the fact you're an idiot.Originally Posted by Beckwin

I don't see your point.
It's pretty plain to see really.
Bush, with his tremendous gift of foresight, should have changed the way things work as well as laws to enable him to be able to send the national guard right after the hurricane hit. It is also plain to see Bush should have become the governor of louisiana as well as the mayor of NO in order to quicken the chain of command to call the national guard. Furthermore, George Bush should have simulated several natural disasters of this calibur on the poor people of canada to discover the shortcomings of the program which had never been used. Finally, Bush should have kept a hard hat and a shovel in his oval office and had a stern look on his face while wearing one and carrying the other when the photo-op right after the hurricane hit occurred. It is debatable whether the president should have stopped the hurricane personally due to global warming he could have curbed years before, but that is a different argument

Bush had cake with McCain.
You're trying too hard, sorta funny though. Bush declared a state of emergency in Lousiana two days before landfall. Blanco (LA Governor) declared a state of emergency on the day it made land. National guard delay was all George.Originally Posted by Demosthenes11

Well it's just me and Krye up there, so I'm pretty sure tears will be shed.Originally Posted by CMMeast

Why are people still posting - Kuya clearly ended this thread.
because hoping thousands of people die is better than making a joke of it after the fact, amirite (and ya, what kuya said)Originally Posted by CMMeast
