Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Christian believes that you can simply ask for forgiveness. You have to change, and make up for the sin you committed.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

You don't have to change at all, accepting jesus into your heart forgives you of your sins (except only one mentioned below)

The idea of purgatory seems to come from passages that don't seem to make much sense otherwise like praying for the dead, but what would the bible be without contradictions. There seems to be far more explicit passages that outright say it's either heaven or hell. Also, blaspheming the holy spirit is never forgivable so those that do that wouldn't even go to purgatory if it existed. Pretty sweet that that is the worst sin that anyone can commit.

I remember that the catholic church debated about purgatory but I don't remember if they concluded if it existed or not.

Kuya is right actually. I remember this being a hot topic a few months ago, the Pope woke up one day and decided Purgatory/Limbo does not exist. This is the shit that I'm talking about in regards to the bible and religion. It is as if they cant seem to make their minds up and include only what they want you to believe.

I supose you're right, I didn't completly thought it out in my first post, and should have worded my idea differently.

When I wrote this line, I wasn't talking about picking what sound the best like a kid in a candy store, but going with beliefs that feel "right". The kind of belief you would defend or accept easily. The following reasoning was to confirm that believing in something isn't completly stupid.

"Accepting jesus into your heart" is pretty vague and could leave place to interpretation. If you accept him in your heart, you have to accept his teaching. I'm certain you can be forgiven, but you need to do more than believe.

As far as I know faith in Jesus is all that is required. Doing good things, or works, isn't really required but they are still suggested. And besides, accepting his teachings means that we are all murderers and rapists which may be hard to swallow to some (of course his teachings aren't all bad so don't jump on that). Besides, I think the best interpretation of that quote is the one that makes the least assumptions which is that it says what it says.

I think more often than not the one that feels right and people will choose is also the one that sounds best to them and offers the best stuff. This is often why their defense of their belief is based on faith because they didn't come to their conclusion based on strong evidence (so being able to defend it easily isn't really a motivator to pick it I think)

Exactly, that is issue number 2. isn't it odd that such a great and universal fable has SO many different versions? I've cited things from the bible (Back before I got into science and my parents forced me into the church) in RL only to be told, "Thats not in my bible". I mean, you think that after 2000 years everyone could get their respective lies on the same proverbial page at least.

The last thing this thread needs is to have Miz point out obvious hypocrisies written within the pages of the bibles, it pretty much does the job by itself.


Mind you this is a completely different Pastor that when I asked about Alien life he laughed and said "Don"t tell me you believe in little green men that live in outer space do you!!??" The contemptuous mockery within that statement still resonates with me till this day.

Actually, this is brought up several times in genesis, as much of the stories were taken from polytheistic cultures. My favorite example is the tower of bable. Where the god(s) looked to each other and realized that if humanity didnt become cluttered, they would become "like us", as the scriptures say. So apparently education and communication leads us to becoming gods ourself.
