Actually, our economy is probably going to be in serious shit when it reaches European prices. The American economy is based off of cheap fuel prices allowing people to to live in their lovely little suburban cul-de-sac and companies to cheaply ship their tacky cheap baubles to big box stores. What happens to a consumer-based economy when it can no longer consume?

we used to have our cities planned like thast, but no city planner is making cul-de-sac anymore because of how innefficient it is. As far as the economy is concerned, I wonder how bad the deficit will be this year as a result of high gas prices, because many companies will be adding part of the rising cost of fuel to their prices. Not to mention the recession where the government is support to be spending more to kick start the economy, and the fact that the government is giving back a fair deal of cash. Before all this shit you guys were averaging a $2 Billion deficit a day

Farmers use gasoline not only for thier pickups, which can be necessary, but also for farm machinery. Not to mention that even in the cities down here, everything is spread much farther apart than it is on the coasts. Even between buildings here you find large patches of unused land. If you've ever taken a trip to texas and tried to rely on our public transportation system to get around, you'd notice that in most places it's really non-existant. Houston just got a railway that runs in downtown, and dallas still uses a bus system that doesn't cover most areas.

I drive for about 25 to 30 minutes to get to work in the morning. And I stop to take a bus near the end. It would take me around two hours to actually walk to where I work.

And that's just everyday. Living in a small town can mean necessary commutes to larger cities one to two hours driving time away. I've started to order everything online instead of taking a shopping trip to Houston. I'm totally getting a Vespa if this keeps up.

octane is a chemical compound, i'd invite an above poster to read about oil cracking (refining) and discover the difference between ethane, methane, hexane...
my memory suggests octane is the hydrocarbon with eight carbon atoms and no double bond?
the rating of a fuel as 85/90/97/etc. is an indicator of the % octane it should contain.
what you get out of using a 'premium' fuel does indeed partly depend on the complexity of your engine management and the manner in which you use the vehicle.

You are confusing the compund iso-octane with octane rating, iso-octane being the primary compound in gasoline.
