    May is women's health month

now I understand that women have (in general) abit more complex health issues then us men usually face but is it really that big of a deal to have a month dedicated towards informing about this? Men's health month is in June, but it seems kinda silly to even spread the two apart, why not just have a Health awareness month?

So many things I see today putting so much importance on women's health. I mean women's life expectancy is already higher then men? shouldn't we be focusing on keeping us guys alive alittle longer? Or are things just so heavily based on femenist and "over" equality now that any kinda issues men face have to take a back seat?

I know I'm kinda ranting, but What do you all think on the seperate gender issues? I know I probably sound like some overly male chauvinist, but I'm really not I have alot of respect towards women and appriate the differences men and women have that often compliment each other. I don't think women have their place or any of that nonsense.

I'm just concerned about alot of the misandric things going on in our society and media and how it's effecting alot of young guys.

Get your pap smears and breast cancer checkups.

Next month it'll be get your prostate exams and learn how to self-check for testicular tumors.

I don't see what the big deal is.

Of course the push for both should be "go get Gardisil. now." (except that the FDA is retarded and guys can't get this cancer-preventing vaccine)

There probably is a general health month too. Are you aware of how much they overbook months?

I kinda don't understand the point of this topic. Men and Women do have some different health issues, and 2 separate months is extra time to raise awareness on those issues for everyone- it's important for spouses/family members/etc to be aware of both. On top of that, given that equal time is given, it's hard to lump this in with "misandric".

Re: May is women's health month

it got brought up at work recently, and I asked (not in front of everyone) about if they're is plans to do stuff for men's health month, and no such plans are in place. While our store is doing the usual raising money for breast cancer and giving out all these books for women's health issues.

to top it off (and I'm not exaggerating this) our store manager is a raging bull-dyke, and I don't have the nerve to challenge her because Oregon is an "at-will" state where you can be fired just because someone doesn't like you, and have little right to fight back. I don't wanna loss my job because I stand up to some radical feminist psycho bitch, because there is no way I could fight back against wrongful termination of employment.

I'm kinda looking for some input, rather it's ways to coupe with the inability to do anything about it, or ways I can push back in hopes of better equal treatment.

An honest, well thought out suggestion (possibly in writing) regarding encouraging prostate health and testicular cancer checkups in the same vein as the women's health month would be the way to go if it concerns you.

However, when it comes down to it breast and cervical cancer are by far more deadly than male-specific cancers, so it could be argued that those are more important to focus on from a gender-neutral perspective.

wouldnt it be a waste to keep women in the kitchen to improve their health AND keep them quiet for mens health all in the same month?

I'm outraged that the rampantly sexist MLB has a pink bat day, but no blue bat day.

edit: It's kind of funny when the OP tries to act respectful of other people, but then in his next post he's calling someone a 'raging bull-dyke' and a 'psycho feminist bitch.' Keep fighting for that equal treatment!

It's actually the insurance companies that are being dicks about it. I recieved this vaccine last year and since I work in a doctor's office I did the research on what insurances cover it and the requirements. It's ridiculous that the age is 16-25 that any insurance will pay for it, after that you're shit out of luck. Like people stop being sexually active after 25 and it wouldn't be worth giving them this vaccine to stop the spread of HPV.

Anyway, it is being fought for right now that men also be vaccinated since they are carriers, obviously they can't get cervical cancer but it should be obvious that the spread would be cut down even more by vaccinating both male and females alike. Of course, it's silly of me or anyone else to think that it's about anything other than money.

Why are the insurance companies against it?

Aren't they for lowering health costs and reducing disease, because people pay them regardless of health. I could be completely wrong on that.

Re: May is women's health month

I'd imagine they are against it for everyone because it's 3 injections over the course of 6 months and each administration is about $300 dollars for the vaccine alone, that's not including how ever much the doctor's office charges for giving the injection. It's the same reason the shingles vaccine, which is extremely painful and can be serious for elderly patients isn't available for as many patients as it should be. It all comes down to money and how much they actually want to spend.

Yeah, but don't people throw health insurers money regardless of health? Why would they want to pay for cancer treatments if they could possibly prevent it?

Re: May is women's health month

I'm just guessing here but I'd imagine it's because it doesn't prevent all strains. It's only effective against 7-8 out of the 20+ strains that are out there and new strains of a lot of virus are becoming more common. Also, it's fairly new still so insurance companies are probably hesitant to say that it's worth the money since it's only been out a year or so officially. They tend to need to see concrete numbers of less women with cervical cancer before they figure it out.

Edit: I was off on my number for strains actually, this is directly from the Gardasil website.

"GARDASIL is the only cervical cancer vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of human papillomavirus (HPV): 2 types that cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. The duration of protection of GARDASIL has not been established."

2 types that make up 70% of cervical cancer cases is probably not a high enough number for them, anything that causes genital warts they probably don't give a shit about, plus they don't know the duration of the vaccine yet.

Men and women have very different health issues. If you have a problem with your manager's actions being sexist concerning this, honestly, I think that's personal.

You could suggest raising money for male health related problems for men's health awareness month. But if your stand is to be angry at people without taking action, you might be better off letting it go.
