I think the movie you are talking about is dragon: the bruce lee story, it doesn't actually star bruce lee, since he was obviously dead at the time. It's a fictitious biography/cash-in of sorts.

I think they did do that in this movie, however I've heard it in some bruce lee documentaries and stuff as well, not sure if it's really true.

i forget his 'real name' pretty sure he wasn't bruce at birth but iirc they made reference to him having a girl's name to protect him from the spirit that was after him
