yup seriously, we have a lot of fraud around here and its required for us to by our regional/district managers to call in all over $200 and any suspicious sales. we ask for id to make it safer and to verify things, and if they wont then we just do a call in.

The Gamestop I work at asks for ID at over $200, and we have something in where we have to input the last 4 numbers on the card to match the electronic part. The only thing I've had to call in is personal checks, which happens for almost every check I got.

"May I see your driver's license, please" is perfectly acceptable, and not illegal. It is a request that can be refused. In my opinion it should always be done. Scammers would probably avoid places which asked this question as not to have to make a scene.

Edit: Ah, now I remember - the main loophole to this is requiring the signed signature to match the reciept. This is what we did, and would not accept CC if they were not signed as per company policy. Not sure if it was legal though, lol.

Yea, it's legal to deny unsigned/unmatched cards. That's covering your ass.

But why should I need to identify myself to buy something? The current fraud dispute system already favors consumers, so from my perspective, it's an annoyance/intrusion to me to have to pass an ID check in order to buy something, since the only cost to me is the time to tell my CC company that I didn't make those thousands in charges that my statement lists. On the other hand, it's an almost foolproof scheme to stop criminals in their tracks. Who has time to come up with a convincing fake ID to use a stolen credit card?

Honestly, I'd just like the ability to password my credit card with a PIN. I think that would be a fair compromise.

i agree, credit cards should have pins, would make everything a lot easier for everyone
