We just got back from seeing this a little bit ago, and imo it was pretty gewd. I guess I'm sort of biased to the genre but I'd say it's worth gas/admission/concessions to see it in the theater. The ending left me feeling though.

I'm a big fan of the creature design, there were soooo many cool things in the first movie, but I don't think this one quite me what I was expecting in that department.. However, the theater we were in was ancient and I think the lighting throughout a lot of it kept me from being able to appreciate it so that might be just my experience. <3 the gryphons though.

Gotta disagree with most of the people in this thread, and say the movie was pretty shitty. The visuals were very nice, and the creatures were cool, but the entire thing just didn't work. It felt like a giant advertisement for Christianity, and half of the movie felt plagiarized from Lord of the Rings. Dialog was cheesy, and the kids acting was just terrible (especially the youngest girl).

It's more so the fact that the Narnia and Lord of the Rings books carry strong similarities. This is because Tolkien and Lewis had a long-standing relationship that began in their days at Oxford. They went on to be part of the same literary club and Tolkien had a profound impact on Lewis, such an impact in fact that Tolkien converted Lewis to Christianity. As for the Christian overtone in the movie, blame the books. They were written with exactly that frame of reference in mind.

From someone who never actually read the books and watched the movie, I still felt left out on some parts in the story plot. Like mainly towards the end when Aslan opened up the portal (Giant vag). The brief explanation from the first book (Wiki'd) felt a bit rushed.

The cinematography was great, and as a fan of the LotR Trilogy, I did see some comparisons from both films (story, theme, and what not). But whatever. If I were to read this 8 or so years ago, I'd be more psyched about it.

I'm sorry, did you actually see 4 & 5? They were disgusting butcheries of the books. However, 1-3 were actually pretty well-adapted, seeing as those books were significantly shorter(though, even that isn't an excuse as to how BAD the fourth and fifth were.)

It can't be that easy to fit a (how many?) hundred page book into a 2-2.5 hour movie. I wish they'd just stretch them out to 3 hours or longer but I didn't think they did a bad job for the time frame they tried to squish everything into.

I am an uneducated heathen. I really didn't notice significant Christian influences, but now that y'all mentioned it I'll probably pick them out all over the place next time I watch it.

I have to wonder if your love of the books is blinding you here. No, Goblet and Order didn't adhere particularly closely to the books, but the movies themselves were still better than the first three in terms of actual movie criteria (i.e. effects, music, acting, directing, etc.). I've personally never understood all the Gambon-hate either. The books never portrayed Dumbledore as a wheezy old man who can barely walk the way Harris did. They're different, but one isn't really better or worse than the other.

In any case, on the subject of Narnia: I hadn't planned to see it, because I was grossly disappointed by the first one. It didn't work as either a book adaptation or as a movie on its own, and basically turned me off to the whole series.

Susan and Peter are out of it, now, and Lucy and Edmund only have one more left. We have yet to meet Eustace, but he'll be in the next one, and then Jill after that. Then Horse and His Boy and Magician's Nephew have different characters, too, whenever they decide to squeeze them in. So we don't really get to see the same characters age through more than 2-3 movies unlike Harry Potter.

Horse And His Boy is ultimately superfluous in the Narnia storyline. They could go straight to Dawn Treader -> Silver Chair -> Last Battle without much difficulty; I don't know that most people would go for The Magician's Nephew. I'd love it personally, but any non-narnia fans won't get much out of it (and/or they'll be rather disgusted and offended by the allegory to the biblical Creation), and might even find themselves awfully confused by the continuity.

I read a few of the Narnia books when I was younger (the dumbed down/short kid friendly versions >.>), and I loved these 2 movies so far ^___^
