Nvidia card problem(not directly ffxi related)

Well, my old graphics card fan died and the card melted itself. <_< It was a geforce 5500(yea, garbage, i know).. today I was looking at potential replacements and the first one I found was a geforce 6200. It's probably worth noting that the PC I use for ffxi is absolute garbage and does not have PCI-Express slots, which limits my choices. I have a flatscreen 1680x1050 monitor for it(which worked fine full resolution on my old card), but whenever I install drivers and attempt to set resolution it is limited to 640x480 in 16 color mode. I went through the windows troubleshooting file, which suggested my monitor drivers as the problem, and did all possible solutions it recommended. None of them worked, and furthermore if I use my onboard graphics card I can change resolution and color quality fine(within the shitty restrictions of onboard graphics) though obviously that won't let me run FFXI. I've tried finding other drivers for my new card online, none of them changed anything. I'm running a fresh install of windows xp pro(as in, reinstalled yesterday and have nothing on it besides the windows updates it's asked for since then) so I shouldn't have any problems caused by spyware or compatibility issues with software. Any ideas?

I think Nvidia has it's own settings that can override everything else, that's how I had to change mine on my old comp. If you installed the drivers there might be something like that somewhere.

Couldn't find anything like that, but I got caught in a repeating loop of windows saying no drivers, installing drivers, restarting, and installing drivers again as soon as it restarted >_> After about 12 iterations of this loop, it's working ?____?
