If Mussina wasn't a Yankee, I don't think you guys would defend him. Being a fan of a certain team, therefore, a fan of certain players sometimes clouds people's judgement about said player. To me, 300 wins for Glavine sort of erases that, especially during the era he pitched. If we took the name off of Moose's stats, looked at them, and picked HoF guys, I don't think he'd be in the HoF talks.

Also, I don't think Schilling is a lock. Whether people like it or not, I don't think he gets in on the first ballot because he's not a fan favorite. His Playoff resume is absurd (much like Smolt'z playoff resume), but I don't think he's a first ballot Hall of Famer. The fact that he wouldn't get in because people don't like him... it's a joke really. It's just the hard reality. Writers are fucking stupid, though. I agree. Schilling just hasn't done much in his career either. He's got 216 strikeouts, an absurd Playoff record, a ton of strikeouts, and has led the AL/NL in wins once each. That's it though. He's the exact same as John Smoltz minus the 154 saves. I think that's the difference between Smoltz and Schilling. Is Smoltz a HoFer to you guys?

And yeah. The 1994 season was ridiculous. I was looking up that stuff on a Wiki, lol.

/jumps for joy. Go Furcal! See Atlanta fans? He didn't want to come back to Atlanta because he missed Atlanta! He just hated Oakland. He accepts the SAME DEAL that the Braves gave him, except stays with LA. Hoorah.
Smoltz should definitely make it in. Going from reliever > starter is somewhat normal, going from stater > reliever and dominating is a whole new species. Then reversing and going back to starting and still being effective is fucking unheard of.

Technically, he went Starter > Reliever > Starter. D:

Have a source on that? Nothing on ESPN atm. The idea of a 3 year deal has been floated around a few times over the last few weeks, but I haven't heard anything solid leaking out.

EDIT: Ah I see it now, can't read it cuz its insider though

Manny will revert to "bratty spoiled child who is only a borderline All-Star" mode by 60 games into the Yankee season if they sign him. You heard it here first!

You can bank on 3 things happening if Manny signs with the Yankees.

    1) He'll be a clown more often than not
    2) A-rod will club 80 HRs hitting in front of him
    3) He'll hit .600 and hit 20 HRs against the Red Sox just to stick it to em, and probably be garbage against every other team.

    Heard it here first!

The source on the Manny thing was a Dominican paper called IMPACTO DEPORTIVO! Brian Cashman claimed the paper's report was false, but denying newspaper reports is par for the course for a GM.

Jesus christ the Yankees are some greedy bastards, rofl.

Just kidding. Hey, if you got the money, why not spend it? So what.. that's Burnett, Tex, Sabathia, and.. A-Rod I guess as the highest paid guys in baseball? If you guys don't win the World Series.. then jesus christ.

I think it's a better signing than Manny would have been. He'll only be 29 in April. I wonder what the Red Sox will do now. I bet Manny goes back to LA or to the Mets...

Johan Santana, Jake Peavy and lolBarry Zito will make more than Burnett next year, but yeah. Manny will probably be up there too if he signs for as much money as he's demanding.

That Manny bullshit was false if I remember right. Tons of reporters came out saying the Yankees never said anything, lol. I wonder if Manny goes to the Nationals now since he just wants money.

A lil overpaid but he is young, productive, a good defensive player, and was potentially going to the Sox if the Yanks didnt pull the trigger. Lots of good things about this signing. I love reading all the haters on ESPN bitch and moan about how the yankees ruin baseball, then insult the yanks saying they dont win. If they don't win championships how are they ruining baseball? Its not like they are winning every year and are so astronomically better, prohibiting other teams from doing anything. We just saw a Rays-Phillies WS for god sakes.

They have the money, they spend it. Any other team that has money, spends it, its just a matter of having more. Give the Rays the Yankees bank account and they do the same thing.

This isn't as bad for the Sox now as it will be in 2-3 years. They have Lowell, Ortiz, and Youk contracts running out after 2010 and 2011. Tex, while certainly an upgrade initially, would have been more of an insurance policy for the Sox for the years after 2011. As it stands now, they'll be relying more on the development of Lars Anderson to fill one of those holes.

This season should be one of the more exciting seasons for the AL East in quite some time. The Yankees have obviously improved all over the place. The Red Sox still have two of the top four AL MVP candidates. The Rays will be bringing back basically the same roster that took them to the World Series. It's certainly very early, but the AL East sure looks like it'll be one of the toughest, if not the toughest, divisions in baseball.

The yankees won't win the world series in 2009, which will make this off-season even more hilarious

Didn't the yankees just get taxed like 60 million?

I wonder what their tax next year will be after this signing.

I hate the idea of a salary cap, but the yankees/red sox salaries "are" getting kind of insane. (please dont start a pro/con salary cap arguement, I don't check this thread enough for that lol)

They have a much better chance the the White Sox, thats for sure. And baring major injuries they are definitely going to be one of the favorites.

And their tax was $26.9 mil, not 60.

Was that supposed to be some sort of rip on the White Sox? Juvenile.

Just like they had a better chance than the Rays last year, I'm sure. Haha
