    Fantasy Novels

Dorky yes, but I need a book to read for an easy project at the end of my senior year (high school), and, suprise suprise, I enjoy fantasy novels. I've read a decent amount, but don't really know what to read now, as none of my friends like fantasy novels. Most of what I've read is a little kiddy: Harry Potter, Narnia, Eragon, LoTR, Golden Compass, Earthsea, Gryphon. It's also stuff I've been reading since freshman year, so whatever. Any suggestions?

Read the Redwall books because those were dope as hell back in middle school. It's like LoTR with furries.

I couldn't put it any better. Plus, I used the name Ferahgo for years online.

edit: Ferahgo is the bad weasel from Salamandastron. Read that one.

    Re: Fantasy Novels

Margaret Weis is my favorite fantasy author. I read many books of the genre, but her always came out as some of the most original imo (except for Dragon lance, but it was still a good series)

Star of the Guardian and Death Gate Cycle are probably my favorite 2.
(don't read the synopsis of every book since they have spoilers, but you can read the top paragraph)

Death Gate cycles was the best imo if you want to give it a try.

    <3 Margaret Weis

Deathgate cycle is a good series...but I love Dragonlance the most, got just about all the books in the series (I think I got about 70 of them) If you are looking for a good series to start off with, I would suggest this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riftwar_Saga

Very good imo, Feist is awsome writter (his new series is awsome as well, continuing off his earlier works with some re-ocurring characters <3 Milamber

I love threads like these, sooo many good fantasy writters out, almost have no time to read all of them!

    Re: Fantasy Novels

Wow, there's so many choices. Better add this to my xmas list lol. I was thinking about it though, and for the purposes of the project I have to do, I think I need to pick a book that stands on its own nicely, therefore something not in a trilogy. Definately going to check out a lot of these though.

    Re: Fantasy Novels

To me, not too many single fantasy novels out there....I'm sure there are, but so far I haven't come across anything.... Majority of them are always in Triliogy format.... I mean, you can pick up "Enders Game" if you want. Granted, it's in a series... but the first book stands enough on it's own if you are looking for just one book.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enders_game more of sci-fi fantasy, but still, good book none the less

    Re: Fantasy Novels

Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series is one of the best series I've ever read. Also Steven Brust's books about Vlad Taltos are funny as hell.
And I also recommend reading George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, it's a series that keeps you on edge when you read it since it takes unexpected turns.
Juliet E. McKenna's Tales of the Einarinn and The Aldabreshin Compass are good series too.

If you're into sci-fi I can highly recommend Alastair Reynolds, Peter F. Hamliton, Steven Baxter, Kevin J. Anderson and Frank Herbert.

    Re: Fantasy Novels

    Seconding Steven Brust and adding:

    Dave Duncan.

He's written dozens of books, most in the fantasy genre. Some are stand-alone and some are series, but they are nearly all brilliant. Some of the really great ones are older though, so you likely won't be able to find them in a new bookstore.

Oh. Although... as book report fodder goes, there's always:
    Villains by Necessity
which is an good book about the bad guys of fantasy novels. A lot of poking fun at fantasy story-conventions and twisting of stereotypes. It was one of my favorites for quite awhile.

QFT Orson Scott Card is one of my favorite authors. He has a TON of great books other than the Ender series that are not in a series, Treason is one of my favorite stand alone books.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King is addictively rewarding.

    Re: Fantasy Novels

Not many I can say but I highly suggest picking up

The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
Rhapsody - Elizabeth Hayden (Pick up the series it's about 4 or 5 books and completely worth it)

    Re: Fantasy Novels

-A song of ice and fire by George R.R. Martin, probably one of the best fantasy series ever.
-The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, really cool book about a thieves guild. It's part of a series that's only two books in, but works well as a stand alone entry.
-Prince of Nothing trilogy by Scott Bakker. Awesome Trilogy that was finished just two years ago I believe. Really Philosophical if thats your thing.
-The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, another great trilogy thats just been finished.

All these suggestions are much grittier and for lack of a better term, more adult than your average fantasy. The first two especially really tone down the magic and rediculousness that seems ever present in most fantasy books.

    Re: Fantasy Novels

George R.R. Martin if you are into more political fantasy with the fantastic elements on the fringes of the story.

A Song of Ice and Fire:
A Game of Thrones, Bantam Books, 1996
A Clash of Kings, Bantam Books, 1999
A Storm of Swords, Bantam Books, 2000
A Feast for Crows, Bantam Books, 2005

With 3 more books forthcoming. You cant really go wrong.

*figures the person that posts right before me mentions this series lol*
