    Re: Haircut question

Where I lived in residence the only 2 haircut places I knew had very obese women as the only option except for once when I had it cut by a young girl. They were big enough that instead of moving their arms they would just rotate their bodies so the arm moved with it, I wasn't too impressed.

    Re: Haircut question

    Never knew anyone tipped haircutters.

Ive been going to my barber for over 10 years, and ive only tipped him a few times cuse it was a holiday. I guess it makes sense to tip chain places since they get shit.. but rofl, my barber has paid off two houses and his work place plus cars, and put his daughter through college and marriage all with cash. The only expenses he has are utilites, and to buy 200$ clippers every few months.

11$ a cut, guy cuts anyone in under 5mins, and only has an average of 300$/month in expenses? Thats a shit ton of profit.

    Re: Haircut question

People tip at Cost Cutters? I just got my hair cut from there today and I saw no one leave a tip. I would feel more like a jackass leaving a tip than not. :<

That is a really nice tip.

On tipping in general, I tend to tip 15% to 30% in places that I frequent. If it's just a one time thing or I didn't enjoy the place I tip standard. I figure you should butter the employees to fight for your service, or treat you extra special when you're there.

My hair cut is normaly 14 dollars. Guy i go to is really nice. I first went to him when he knew almost no english, but now when i go he trys to speak only english. He's a good guy, so i dont mind giving him the 6 dollars out 20.

But i normaly follow this rule.

You dont fuck up what your doing, and your nice 20%+ tip.

    you suck 10% or less.

    Re: Haircut question

I hate tipping because no matter what you tip you're going to feel awkward about it during and after, unless you're heartless and don't care, I suppose.

Anyone else think its not just a conspiracy that places like to make haircuts like, $13-$14? Where a $5 tip leaves you so close to $20 you almost feel like a jagoff to ask for a dollar back off $20... I don't know, I always feel awkward. And I don't like carrying around a ton of singles so I can count out an exact tip, shrug.

I went the other day, was 14.95, paid 20 altogether, that's 33% tip and I felt like I overpaid in the end... but woulda felt weird asking for money back. I hate doing that. TELL ME I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE

if you are working minimum wage jobs you probably cant afford to buy anything that requires a tip anyway, no harm no foul.

    Re: Haircut question

I dunno maybe I'm spoiled, I work a job that nets me over $5000 a month based entirely off of how well people tip, so I guess I'm biased towards tipping people who deserve it. Then again when I worked retail I still tipped well, so it's probably just because I'm not a douchebag.

    Re: Haircut question

I'm interested by the US tip culture. Over here we tip much less, and feel less obliged to tip.

Anyway, do you guys think that perhaps by tipping every service industry you're using a more or less fair system than forcing an employer to pay his staff a decent wage? Of course prices would rise, but you'd know that employees were being fairly well paid and that you had a set price to deal with and no deciding what's a fair tip.

Or would you prefer to stay as you are? Sure, there's the complication of deciding what's a fair tip, and the employee has to rely on luck/attitude to earn a decent wage, but you get to make the decision based on the way they've performed and how much you can afford.

I just woke up and I think it's horribly worded, it's not meant to be a loaded question, just tell me if you like your current gratuity system.

Usually costs me 13, but me and my brother go to the same barber and we pay 20. Guy's cool as shit and takes his time.

This. I understand that most service jobs in the USA get paid under normal minimum wage because they are expected to be tipped, but why? Are restaurants, hair salons, bars, etc. all that unprofitable in the USA to the point that they have to pass off the cost of their employees to the customer?

Actually it's only waiters/waitresses afaik, which coincidentally are the only people I tip.

There are plenty of other service jobs that are allowed to be paid under normal minimum wage; bartenders, busboys, bellhops, etc. Not sure if hair stylists/barbers are the same way, couldn't find anything in a quick search, but I doubt it.

Here, if you make under minimum wage including the tips, your employer is legally obligated to make up the difference, but I'm not sure if that's applicable in all states.

    Re: Haircut question

I always tip 10% on everything unless the person does a really good job in which case I'll give more + my personal thanks.

This is mostly because I am lazy and always in a hurry, 10% is a lot easier to do in my head than anything else.
