    Re: Haircut question

I pay for everything with my Debit card, or 20s. For haircuts/food/bars, Tab is 10-20%, depending on service (moar for bewbs), and anything else is w/e i get back in change, and close to 15%.

$14 haircut, pay with a 20, give them 3 bucks from my change. I just ask for all ones, and give them a proper tip. $6 is way too fucking much for 15 minutes.

Sidenote: Get the ugly chicks, or a gay guy. The better looking the gal is, the less she has to try for a decent tip, cuz with a haircut, you'll always end up touchin bewbs. If she's fuck ugly, she's more likely to go out of her way to do a good job, cuz she can't rely on a nice ass for tips, at least that's my experience.

Ninja Edit: Gay dudes just do better. I don't mind a guy flirting with me, if he does a good job with my hair.

Other edit: I haven't been to a barber in close to a year, I've been shaving my head at home.

My stylist charges $43 for a cut and I just leave him $60 when we're done.

Everyone wants tip dollars now. I'm starting to see them at coffee&donut shops. Even fucking food court restaurants at malls started having them out. I know someone who saw one at a drive-through window once.

It's the "norm," i.e. people don't want to look like cheapos, assholes, avoid awkward moments with the workers, etc. There are "tip jars" everywhere, shit's out of control. I personally don't tip unless the person goes out of their way to yada yada yada.

    Re: Haircut question

Fast food workers and baristas generally don't get tips. However, you'll usually see a tip jar at their counter which can be ignored without feeling like a cheap ass. These workers are paid minimum wage or better and tips aren't how they make a living. They earn the majority of their wages via a paycheck.

People who cut hair, Serve food in a sit down restaurant, Pour alcoholic drinks, Carry your luggage to your hotel room, Drive your ass around (Taxi), and generally perform a job that requires the worker to earn the majority of their wages via tips. These are the people you that generate feelings of guilt and resentment if not tipped, as they earn their living from the tips they recieve. Usually their paychecks are VERY VERY small because it is known and accepted that they'll receive the bulk of their earnings from their customers.

    Re: Haircut question

The best answer I can give you, being a stylist is tip what ypu feel is deserved. The average tip for a cut in a salon in the mid range such as Great Clips is 2-3 dollars. $6 was definately a very nice tip and she should be greatful for any tip she gets.

No stylists do not set thier own prices in a salon unless it is booth rental or privately owned. in fact most stylists are paid on commision and like wait staff depend solely on thier tips. However the tip needs to be EARNED a good stylist needs to be able to understand what the client is asking for and deliver that goal to the customers likeing IE if teh customer wants to be done quickly don't chat at them for 20 min before you start and 20 min after. If they are reading a book or doing something else odds are they don't want to be bothered with small talk at all, stylist need to be able to read your body language and know where you fall.

And last but not least i was always taught there are two ppl you should always tip and not pissoff:

    1) your tatooist/piercer.
    2) your hairdresser.

    Re: Haircut question

I'm weary of actually tipping in sit down restaurant for one reason, and that is the income for waiters/waitress is not always that bad (bad referring to under minimum wage and relying on tips to make it up). I had a summer class laster year with a friend I hadn't seen since high school and he was working at some steak house making $8-something and hour + tips. Soon after that another friend of mine got a job at a restaurant serving making $6 something + tips. After that I've been much more stingy and I normally only tip in restaurants now if I have great or exceptional service; otherwise, I just let my fiancee cover it as she tips no matter how the service is.

Hair stylist are the only people I tip 100% of the time.

I Tip nothing, what with being a filthy European and all.

Parents bought a clipper when I was 12 or so and Me and my Dad have been doing our own cuts for a Decade. Wonder how much money we've saved.

I never understood the whole "Tip Mentality", then again it's not really seen in Europe, or at least not in my hometown.
Was quitet the culture shock in Uni too when someones Bartender Boyfriend visited from the US and found out he was the only one giving out tips.

My "tip mentality" in bars is to give them the nearest round number, because I can't be bothered sorting through £1.35 worth of change whilst getting drunk. Otherwise, yeah: filthy degenerate non-tipping Euro-bastard.

    Re: Haircut question

only time I've tipped in a barber was when I got a quick shave (left it to long) and he generously charged me only £1 (most charge £5 for a simple, 2min razor shave, wtf).

it's mostly a North American thing (maybe South America too, don't know people who've been). most of Europe and Asia don't tip, i know some Asians think it's insulting to be tipped, like you're disrespecting their work ethic as if they go to work to purposely do a bad job.

Anyway, do you guys think that perhaps by tipping every service industry you're using a more or less fair system than forcing an employer to pay his staff a decent wage? Of course prices would rise, but you'd know that employees were being fairly well paid and that you had a set price to deal with and no deciding what's a fair tip.

Or would you prefer to stay as you are? Sure, there's the complication of deciding what's a fair tip, and the employee has to rely on luck/attitude to earn a decent wage, but you get to make the decision based on the way they've performed and how much you can afford.

I just woke up and I think it's horribly worded, it's not meant to be a loaded question, just tell me if you like your current gratuity system.
i don't really agree that prices will rise, instead of paying $25 for a meal and tipping $5, they'd just charge $30 for the same meal. overall, what people pay out of pocket should be about the same.

i'd prefer not tipping mostly because i'm too lazy to calculate it. ideally, there would be no expected tipping but you'd be allowed to for above average service. some places don't allow any tipping at all and that's really weird to me.

    ---

i tip $5 for my regular barber, used to tip $3 when i didn't have a regular.

You mean, $8.07 an hour? At least in Washington.

Minimum wage is minimum wage, unless you're in one of those special states that allows employers to count expected tips as part of their wage.

That's actually not true for waiters and waitresses here. My pay here was $2.65 at a Mexican restaurant, and that's the norm. Hostesses and Hosts, cooks, and servers have to be paid minimum wage though. At any establishment where tips are considered expected, they can do this.

That's why they have the tipping standard, gratuity is supposed to be at least double the tax. You can go in one day for eight hours and make 24.00, or go in for four and make 130. It all depends on how busy the day is and how nice your customers are. Stupid system really.

I guess Texas is a special state? I never knew this wasn't the general way of things.

I believe most states have a much much lower "minimum wage" for "expected to be tipped" employees.

Edit: Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington are the states where there is no "tip credit against minimum wage" and everyone regardless of tips must be paid the same minimum. Every other state has some sort of "tip credit" where tips can be used to bring an employee up to minimum wage. Source: http://www.dol.gov/esa/programs/whd/state/tipped.htm

    Re: Haircut question

Every time I see a tip thread, I get self conscious thinking I've been stingy because I tend to tip only like $2-3 per person I'm paying for, and only for haircuts, restaurants, bartenders, and pizza guys. Aside from a bar, I don't tip when I go up to a counter to get something, like at a starbucks, drive-through, or cafe where you walk up to place an order.

    Re: Haircut question

I have had this conversation before, and it's a tough problem.

I don't expecially have a problem with tipping. My tips usually end up being about 15% defaultly. More if the person was good, less if the person was bad.

The question becomes "Why should I tip?" Servers become obviously enraged at people who don't tip, calling them cheap-asses and such, but those people absolutely do not have to tip. I think the most insulting thing as a customer is the places that automatically add in an 18% or 20% tip. Why not just charge more for the service? I think employees should be upset at their employers and not as much at the customers. If they think you are only worth $2.15 an hour, what does that tell you?

People in the service industry have to make that choice. Do you pick a position with a static income, or do you pick a position with a variable income? If the variance doesn't work in your favor, who is to blame?

I think the North American tip culture spawned form the idea that "If a good chunk of the money I get paid comes from my customers, I need to treat those customers well." Who doesn't like being treated well? With that in mind, the idea is that since the customers tip, the servers will try to work better/be nicer to the clients. This is definately not the case however. There have been a few times I have refused to tip, and like I said originally, my tip amount always reflects the amount of effort placed into my service.

    Re: Haircut question

I tip well if the service is to my satisfaction. If I go to a restaurant and the Waiter/Waitress looks like they've rolled out of bed 2 minutes ago they aren't getting a tip. If I have to grab the girls attention for a drink repeatedly, your not getting a tip. If you're a rude asshole, you're obviously not getting a tip. If the service is good and the food is good I have no problem tipping up to 25% on the tab.

Whoever mentioned the "mandatory gratuity" above is spot on as well. I hate this more than anything. I've actually gotten in a fight with a restaurant owner b/c I refused to tip 20% for a party of 6 when I had sub par service. It wasn't enough for me to completely stiff the bitch, but dinner wasn't exactly an enjoyable experience....I actually tipped 10% and the dude chased me down while I was getting into my car.

My hair usually costs anywhere between $25-$50 depending if I'm getting it cut, or if I'm getting highlights (fuck you before the comments even start raining down). I tip $10 on my regular haircut and $15 on Highlights+Cut. I've been going to the same girl for 5-6 Years. She's hot as hell and I get the whole deal when I go to get my hair cut. Shave, Wash/Rinse, and cut.

I honestly never knew you should tip a Tattoo Artist till I read it on here on another thread. I figured the cost of tattoo was pretty expensive.. Around $600 for 6 hours and change over a period of 2 sessions. I will tip in the future though since the guy did fantastic work.
