The whole "Tip them or they treat you like shit" thing is bullshit imo.

Working CS myself the first thing I was told was that you treat each Customer the same regardless of how big a douche they are.

If you alienate a Customer because they don't tip well once or twice chances are you're alienating a customer who might come back and tip next time. And most employers will be more upset about losing a paying customer than about your Tip.

Working for an Online company the general consensus is that a happy customer will bring 3 of his friends back with him, but an unhappy one will take 10 away, and I imagine in a Bar or Restaurant scenario it's more evident.
People bitch a lot more than they praise, it's sucks, but anyone working CS has to deal with that and think about it before they act up and treat a customer like shit because they didn't get a tip last time.

Some of my co-workers bend over backwards to please our customers, and it causes more problems than you can imagine. Having the phones or emails clogged means that another customer gets fucked.
It also means that they get used to preferrential [sp?] treatment and expect the world on a platter every time, anyone says "No" later or they don't get everything they want and it raises a shitstorm.

I can imagine it's the same anywhere. Captain Douche-Tits walks in flaunting his cash and gets the best service possible and leave a big tip and he cements his place as royalty in the eyes of the servers, meanwhile Joe Average gets ignored, leaves fuck all tip because of the piss poor service he gets in comparison and then gets shunned by servers in the future.
Then one day Douche-Tits doesn't get his balls licked and throws a hissy fit in public for everyone to see.

It's a cyclical thing brought on by both employees and customers, but bottom line is the Customer can always go some place else to get better service, and most employers will welcome their employee's consistency dealing with multiple customers than the excellent service they gave that one guy.

I recall going to a restaurant in the UK and I had 3 other groups who walked in after me served before I was.
Some guys in a suit, a party of 3 seniors, and a group of girls all got served before I did despite the fact they walked in 10-30min after I did, because the guy in Baggy Jeans with a wallet chain's money isn't good enough.

I had to wait 30 min to get a drink order despite calling the waiters attention multiple times, the food arrived cold, they charged me for a drink I never got, and at the end of it all they expected me to tip them, in addition to a service charge on the bill.
When I told them to fuck themselves for the piss poor service they actually had the gall to complain about my behaviour. So I left, never went back, and neither did any of my friends or my family.

At pubs I never tip. Sorry, but getting me a Pint of Scrumpy doesn't involve enough effort to warrant a tip. If I were ordering some ridiculous mixed drink or obscure shot maybe, but fuck if I'd ever pay for a mixed drink or shot when I can use the same amount of cash for two pints.

Hell, even when I get served at a pub by a friend I never tip, even though I knew he'd been working split shifts all week for 10+ hours a day for the last 7 days. All I did was buy him a round or two at the end of the day.


If you're getting shit all pay in a shitty job, start looking for a new one. Most CS jobs have a ton of skills that can be applied to other jobswhere you don't need to live off of tips.

Tipping Bartenders is rough too.

I'm sorry, but I'm not throwing you $2 after every single beer you get me. Especially when the price is jacked to $5-$6 a bottle, and I paid anywhere from $10-$20 just to walk in the fucking door because I don't have tits and a vagina.

If I'm drinking mixed drinks or shots all night then I will leave $10 for the entire night when I leave.

Establishments WANT you to tip, because in the end, it makes them money because they have to pay their employees less. I never really understood why there are special laws in place for certain kind of work. Minimum wage becomes "Kinda Minimum Wage" in certain service fields, which I find pointless.

are you one of those people that just have a huge need to stick it to "The Man"? establishments on their own do not decide they want you to tip, society at large decides that.

i don't think marijuana or prostitution should be illegal but i understand why the laws are there. the reason all these laws are in place is because they help regulate how society operates.

the government and the establishments can not undo decades of Americans tipping at restaurants.

and because people do tip at restaurants, governments are going to find ways to tax it, because people do tip at restaurants, establishment owners will need to predict/guess how much that tip is so they can adjust the pay accordingly so they can manage their expenses.

And the resturant isn't protecting it's employees, it is just shifting the responsibility of a fair wage back to the customers (Which they need to do anyway, but noone else does it like this...).

the automatic charge for large groups does just that. no other deadly drug is legal like tobacco either, so what's your point, just because some things are unique means they can't exist?

also i really think you have the cause and effect flipped. do you have any facts to support that tipping as a practice was created because restaurants pay their staff poorly? or was lower standard base salaries created to counter balance the societal habit of tipping?

I agree the problem is more about social pressure than with the service industry at large. My comment about the minimum wage wasn't against the wage itself, I just don't think its fair to have laws to make an Official Legal Minimum Wage and then go "And this applies to everyone. ...except this group of people, we can pay them less." THAT seems stupid to me.

My greatest college motivation was "I don't want to do jobs like this for the rest of my life." I have had shitty service jobs before. They pay a non-livable wage, and overall they suck.

My mom used to bartend at a ski resort in the winter, and a night club in the summer, and she made over six digits a year. At both places she made like $1-2 an hour, with everything else being tips, the vast majority of which were not taxed, because she claimed only maybe 1/4 of the tips she made. I remember she would get these retarded pay checks for like a quarter, because they would take tax directly out of her $~2/hr salary. And this is working an average of 2 days a week, only more than that when it was busy during the week, like around holidays. She was even able to collect unemployment for the months during the spring/fall, when she was 'laid off'.
