    Networking PS3/Xbox360 to computers

Ok, so I have a PS3 and Xbox360 and have been wanting to network my personal computer to them both so I can watch share media. For the xbox360 I dloaded the microsoft media extender that the xbox site said to do and have had reasonable success playing media on the system (although the media extender is a pain in the ass and has no "auto play" or decent music play function but oh well.

The question comes with the PS3. Ever time I scan for media servers on my PS3 it only sees my wife's computer (she has microsoft media connect hers), but even then I cant actually see anything on her computer (i can see the files, but it says they are all empty). And it wont even detect my computer. Ive tried Dloading media connect on my computer several times and it never seems to work.

Anyone have any experience with this?

For PS3 use TVersity works great and can auto convert weird formats, and is 100% free, not a trial.

    Re: Networking PS3/Xbox360 to computers

Thanx, I dloaded it and it now recognizes the media server, but I still have a problem. Whenever the PS3 goes into my file directories on either computer, it acts as if there are no titles in each of the folders. Is there some sort of file format error or is there a way that I can get the PS3 to recognize them?

OK, so let me get this strait...

I can network my PS3 (well, I'm buying one soon) to my computer, and stream media files to my PS3 from my PC. So, essentially, I can download some HD .mkv files and stream them to my PS3, and watch them on my TV?

Well, PS3 can't do .mkv, but you've got the idea. The list of supported formats are on the Playstation 3 support page.

Ok, now it can see all my files, but whenever I try and play most of it, it says "no titles", like it sees folders for all my songs, but each song's folder is empty Q.Q.

First thing to check is to make sure you're trying to play songs from the Music menu and not Video or Photo. Same applies to playing Video or viewing Photos. Sounds silly, I know.

You're using <Triangle> > Display All when you go to browse your connected device, right? The next thing would be to check if those songs are encoded in a format the PS3 can handle. Consult the list I posted above. Be very careful to note that you need to match the exact container/codec combination to allow playback.
