Autism in children can generally be lessened if it is diagnosed before age four. After four, the damage, so to speak, is done and difficult to reverse. As for the cause of autism, I remember when we talked in my graduate classes how autism used to be attributed to 'refrigerator moms', mothers who were too 'cold and unmoving' toward their baby and who caused them to internalize their trauma and becoming withdrawn. The sad thing about those with autism is that they are often not aware of how serious their isolationism is. It takes a lot of work and therapy for an autistic child to function in any kind of social setting. Compound that with the high level of mental retardation in the population, and it gets even harder.

Not all those with autism have mental retardation. MR deals with the ability to perform daily living skills and comprehend. Autism involves functioning outside of one's personal space. The fact it's a spectrum disorder (many, many people have lesser forms of it in one way or another and don't even know it) makes it even more misunderstood.

Returning to the topic at hand, from my experience, when a child is not delivered properly or lose oxygen at any time to their brain, there are higher risks of autism in later years (not to mention MR).
