did you happen to install sp3 recently?
I get the same as Minimaru, and yes I've installed SP3 recently.

Happens to me often actually, every time I reboot my machine and start up pol I get that message. The game won't load up the playonline service until I choose to open it up again.

windows XP SP3, recently released, but it's just a rollup of bug patches, nothing really new or exciting in this release.

SP3 = service pack 3, they're like a bundle of update patches, sometimes coming with nifty new stuff too.

A guy in my LS had his main account's password changed yesterday. I had him search for this .dll and sure enough he had it. Got him through the steps to cleaning it and getting in contact with a GM. Amazingly he got his account back today. Everything non r/e had been stripped, but that was an amazing turn-around. He's not around right now, but he's been on the phone all day with SE trying to get his items restored.

It'll take approximately 7 days for an investigation and item restoration, and by 7 days I mean no fucking clue how long

I found this file on my Dell laptop but not in the system directory, it's in the Dell/support directory ( if I remember well, I'm at work atm ). I didn't log on FFXI last night on my laptop and didn't bother with the file since it's not in the system directory. Should I get rid of it ? I never use the Dell Support Center anyway... lol
After reading this topic I did a search and found the same file as you

    C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\HWDiag\bin\smart.dll.

Scanned it with AVG and Macaffe and they said it was safe, I use firefox and no script so if this is the problem file i don't know how it got on my machine.

Anyone know if this is the same thing or nothing to worry about?

There are several legitimate smart.dll's out there. Windowblinds, RivaTuner, and some programs which check the status/monitor your hdds http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T use it.

I have the keylogger on my pc but i'm afraid to change the PW on my pc since if there are any other keyloggers waiting for me to see the original keylogger and change my pw in a panic so that they can see me typing in the new one.
It looks like i'm going to be unable to do anything wotg for a while and/or lose all of my parsing capabilities by reverting to my ps2.

Smart.dll can't just be a keylogger or my account wouldn't have been stolen. If thats what you're talking about.

Remove the smart.dll and then change your password. Its better to take that risk then to not change it and hope that the smart.dll didn't already steal it from you. If that makes any sense... I'm not sure I said it right.

Change your password using your PS2 and reformat your PC. Simple.

router setting were changed and as far as i can tell the ps2 network options dont have anything that will let me input the username/pw into the ps2 for the router. If anyone knows how to adjust my ps2 to work with the router linksys router i'd be very thankful.

I've been pulling together information for my LS about this issue and i was wondering... anyone particularly notice that more accounts are hijacked on weekends vs. weekdays?

I've started wondering if the information being collected isn't being used immediately. It's much more difficult to get in touch with SE reps over the weekend, which means you account could be taken and stripped before you can get it frozen. If this is the case, your account could be compromised on say, Tuesday, but not actually hijacked and stripped until a Saturday. This offers a short window in which to try and remedy the situation, such as deleting the offending .dll, uninstalling POL, flushing your system, and changing your POL info via PS2/3 or X360 before reinstalling.

Reports from my LS seem to support this theory, but i'd like to get a larger sample.

I was compromised at least a week before my account got stolen, which happened somewhere between Thursday night and Friday morning when I found out. If you were compromised though, sometimes, it's hard to really know until you no long have access to your account. I'm pretty sure if they were smart about it, they'd do it on a weekend, but I don't know how knowing this will change anything, unless you do a weekly flush on Fridays.

If you haven't changed your password yet... I'd just go hook up your PS2 directly to your cable/dsl and do it now, figure out router stuff later.

Edit: There is a program called Killbox (not sure on name its been a while) that might be useful in removing the file, also hijackthis has an option to delete files on reboot.
killbox failed to remove this smart.dll
