I dunno aurik, they're pretty spot on with their review of Norton.

Norton Antivirus 2008 is a full featured antivirus and antispyware product. It includes several options that are commonly passed over by other suites while leaving many out that would be beneficial. The Norton scanning engine is one of the most complete on the market, but suffers from issues with system resource usage and overzealous integration with your computer that can cause freezing or simple hanging application.
Details like the performance drag the software causes on the system are a key chafing point between me and anti-virus/spyware products. The fact that these reviews appear to respect that point of view is a pleasant surprise. It's not like #10 means 'must buy A++'

The 'top ten' list approach to reviews is an enormous turnoff but what actual information they have to present is more than what's written on the box of the product. You could do a lot worse in a review.

Re: AVG Free ends 5/31, what next?

AVG 8.0 has a free trial, but they WILL pester you everyday after that to upgrade and pay. It also stops updating itself after the trial period is up. My wife downloaded it on her laptop 40 days ago (I know this because AVG keeps reminding us.) I'll try the link others provided and see if that works too.

I've heard of Avast, but most of the things I've heard are bad. I guess I might give it a shot on my own and see how I like it. Thanks for the useful replies thus far, but I will say at this point I don't want a cracked version of an AV program. Hmm, I bet my work will give me a discount on Symantec Corporate, maybe even for free. I hadn't thought of this until now. Would that be a decent route to go?

Re: AVG Free ends 5/31, what next?

i might like avg more if i had found it before avast, i can't say either way which is better as avast has served me well enough that i wouldn't consider any other free option unless there was some glaring flaw about it found.
If i was in the market to pay for a program though, it would definitely be nod32 by a long shot.

That would be the best route to go. Symantec Corporate is what Norton should be. It's simple to use and consumes very few resources compared to every other AV I've used personally. I absolutely recommend it.

I've been using AVG 8.0 for almost a month and it hasn't bothered me to upgrade since I got it. Downloaded from free.grisoft just like I did with the older versions. I don't know WTF you guys are doing lol

The list still includes norton and mcafee, both of them are ridiculous amounts of fail. Not only that, if you look at the review of Avast, it scores very high in every category, except ease of use. Compare this to norton/mcafee which lack in more critical areas.

No offense, for something like a virus scanner, ease of use is about the least important attribute, behind things like "does this actually protect me from viruses" and "can i leave it running while i do other things on the computer".

Was currently using just Firefox (with plugins) and AVG free for security, now I've downloaded Avast thanks to this thread. I'll consider how good it is after I finish up the thorough scanning (27% shit's like FFXI updates ) although the window for it is pretty innovative in itself. I like how it appears as a music player .

I'm thinking they mixed up the ease of use and effectiveness bars because they say that it was easy to install ect, and then say:

AVAST 4 didn't receive the West Coast Labs Checkmark level 1 or 2 or the VB100%. AVAST wasn't as effective as some of the other products reviewed. For better virus protection refer to some of our higher ranked products
Also, what do you want them to do, leave Norton and McAfee off the list? We all know they're bloated, but as far as virus protection goes, they're still decent. Again, the point of posting that list was not so much as "here's the best virus scanners in order" but the fact that they give indepth reviews for each product and tells you whats good/bad about them. Again, if you don't like the list, provide a better one....

AVG is just discontinuing the old version; download the new version, for free, and you don't lose a thing.

They're giving people those warnings because they changed the core engine for 8.0, and can't upgrade over the net; but there's still a free version. Naturally though, if you just click through the warning they're going to try to get you to buy the full edition...
