You really need to go back and play the other three in order to understand what's going on. Metal Gear's story is convuluted enough on it own with prior knowledge of what's already happened. Suddenly jumping on to the end is just gonna make it worse for you.

MGS 2 alone could give you headaches trying to follow it's storyline even if you had full prior knowledge of the rest of the series, jumping in with 0 knowledge about the rest of the series would likely induce seizures.

where did you preorder from? gamestop/ebgames doesn't have it for preorder yet

You have to pre-order the limited edition gun metal PS3 online, however I'm sure it's sold out.

They have this huge 60+ page MGS .pdf somewhere that is practically a MGS encyclopedia, you can try to read it, it'll help. I used it as a refresher since it's been years since I played the others...

well yeah I figured but gamestop/ebgames don't have it on their site for preorder, I know futureshop and it isn't sold out but afaik they only ship to canada. edit: called gamestop and they said they'll have it up for preorder about a week before

Well, you can pre-order the 80gb bundle at toy r us right now. But the limited edition 40gb gun metal gray is only being sold online through konami. They aren't selling those at retailers afaik.

Definitely get a hold of the Essential Collection if you can, it contains all three MGS games and after playing through them you won't feel so confused when you play through MGS4.

I probley could. The reason I got that is because my girlfriends brother owns a 60gig, but he REALLY wants this 40gig limited edition one. So I told him I'd buy this for him if he gives me his 60gig. He's happy because he's a huge MGS fan, I'm happy because I can play FFXI on my PS3 lol.

I consider MGS2 to be the current peak of video game storytelling. It's a post-modern, self-reflexive masterpiece. The idea that you should be able to digest and discard all the information in the story at first glance is foolish. Depth in storytelling requires some effort on the receiver's end.

...Um no. I'm pretty sure I got the story, I just also thought that it could have been constructed much better. It's not post-modern (maybe a few things, but not really on the whole), it's not reflexive (self-reflexive is redundant) it just is crappily done. It was confusing for no good reason. There were also a few elements of it that made no sense. IMO the main thing that MGS2 did right was its way of adding more depth to Snake by not making him the protagonist. The rest could have been paced a ton better

I also don't consider MGS storytelling to be video game storytelling, really; it rarely integrates game with story. It's very much a movie integrated into a game.

They did toss too much information in your face, both during the chat with the pres and all the cutscenes at the end.

However, after watching them 2 or 3 times you pretty much get it. And i'm sure MGS4 will clear stuff up even more.

Also I just finished MGS3 again this last weekend, and loved every fucking minute of it. 4 is going to be so damn epic.
