I enjoyed everything the game had to offer my first playthrough. I think every character had their place in the grand scheme of things and played their parts well. Yes some bits were fairly unbelievable, but I'm pretty good at suspending disbelief so it didn't really bother me. I played through 1 - 4 in somewhere around a month which really helped give me a strong appreciation for the continuity Kojima created as the series progressed. One of my favorite details in MGS4 was

    Spoiler: show
how all of the item pickups in the revisited areas of Shadow Moses in Act IV were identical and in the same exact positions as they were in the original MGS.

I'm currently working on my Chicken run to get most of the easy emblems out of the way. Snake has been sitting in a box since I left for work at 7am this morning after an overnight crouch/wallhugging session.

Sorry for not reading through all of the thread before asking something [w/has prolly alrdy been asked], but I just don't want to take the chance of reading spoilers (since old spoiler tags don't work correctly w/the new forum and I'm easily tempted).
So... I played MGS1 & 2, but not 3... will I be totally lost going into MGS4 (I just bought the MGS4 bundle w/is arriving on Friday)? Just want heads up if I should wiki MGS 1-3 to get caught up. & if somebody else knows of a good site that details 1-3 I would appreciate it!

edit: and how awsome is the game? lol

You won't be totally lost if you didn't play 3. 1 and 2 are almost must-haves. You'll be a bit confused by some of the characters by not playing 3. You can read the wiki or watch some video reviews of 3 to refresh yourself. Also, game is great.

Does MGS4 recap the main/important parts of 1 & 2 enough to refresh your memory or bring back stuff u forgot? or doesn it thrust u right into everything expecting you to be caught up remeber everything from games 5+ years ago lol

It's one of those things where you'll see something in 4, and think "OH YEAH, I recall that from 1." Still, to understand the nuances and details, you need to either replay or reload on wiki. You can also download the free MGS database on PSN and review it. It will not spoil anything from MGS 4 unless you have save data to a cleared MGS4 game.

You won't be completely lost, but I highly recommend playing through 3 first. I'm very glad that I held out. Not only will you be able to appreciate certain points more in MGS4, MGS3 is a darn good game.

Spoiler tags still work btw. Just put text in [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ].

For the love of God don't skip MGS3. Until 4 came out it was by far my favorite in the series and it's still absolutely incredible.

Oh man, skipping MGS3 would be terrible imo.
Even compared to MGS4 it's a great game in it's own right, in some ways I find MGS3 to be superior to 4.

There's just some moments you really don't want to miss.

Skipping MGS3 at this point would ruin it for you, other than the boring bosses (lolCobra unit) it is a fantastic game with an epic ending.

Every Metal Gear Solid game needs to be played in order to successfully enjoy the full experience of MGS4. People have disagreed with me on some other boards, but that is my honest opinion. Every game in the series is extremely amazing in it's own sense, and each deserves to be played through at least once. There's really no excuse not to play the other games in the series if you want to completely understand and appreciate the masterpiece that is Metal Gear Solid 4.

Personally, Metal Gear Solid is still my favorite game of all time, with Metal Gear Solid 4 being very close to topping it. I remember randomly seeing MGS1 at Blockbuster one day and I picked it up; never returned it.

I thought that MGS3 had by far the best story of the entire series. Its overall presentation just blew me away at the time, and I pretty much felt the same way when I replayed it a few weeks ago. Its not a game to skip.

For those not aware, there is a Metal Gear "collector's set" out now that features 1, 2, and 3 for 30 dollars.

    Truth.

If the ending doesn't make you feel then you aren't human.

Got the main games, but not all the extras that the separate copies would have (no second disc with Subsistence for the MSX ports).

MGS3 was awesome in more then a way. The story, particularly the final battle were epic. The gameplay itself was great in overall, but there was so many little annoying thing. Loading the menu to change gears and heal yourself, the camera angle when you're outside or even the brutal AI when you're discovered (fuck them..let me at least hide in a locker).
