    Re: Most inept movie director...

Of those three, Uwe Boll is easily the worst director. He couldn't direct traffic on an Amish farm. M Night's directing is "OK" but he's a one trick pony with his screenwriting. Like others have said Brett Rattner is the closing pitcher for the studios. Takes a sure money maker and brings home a profit, of course a better director could bring in a bigger profit.

As for Michael Bay, I will give this man credit for one thing. He knows to have a good score for his movies. Music scores can easily make or break a movie. And how could you people not like The Rock or Bad Boys?

And George Lucas (Another director who knows to have a great score for his movies) Yeah I know it's fashionable to hate on Episodes 1-3 , but don't forget his original hits American Graffiti and yes, Herbie.

For some reason, the happening seems strangely familiar. However I'm sure I'll see the movie, as I enjoyed Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, and The Village.

And btw, you can blame the suckiness of the new Indy flick on Lucas.. he tends to have that effect on successful film franchises.

Man, Signs may not have been the best of his lot but The Village, Lady in the Water, and Unbreakable are all awesome. Shyamalan is a genius when it comes to atmosphere, even if the acting isn't stellar. His plots are pretty unpredictable too, I mean really when you're first watching The Village, you can't tell me you saw some of the key points coming (monsters being a farce, etc)...

You guys have lost your minds. I'd say unbreakable was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I can barely even remember it, I just remeber it being awful. Clearly you are the same people who don't like Dr. Pepper.

    M. Night's suck is partly his fault, and partly YOUR fault; YOU being the moviegoer who walks in the door with the wrong expectation. The guy has really good ideas, if you argue this point you are either an elitist cocksucker like Roger Ebert who thinks every movie should be born of missionary onry sex between Oscar Schindler and that red haired bitch from Titanic or you get whooshed a lot. His execution is not always the greatest, and I think he really should get some consultation on his writing.

He tries to give you something different from what you get everywhere else. If you go see a Spielberg movie, you expect to see an epic drama. If you see a Scorsese movie, you expect to see intense character development. If you watch a Kubrick film, you expect to see something very thought-provoking. If you go see a Micheal Bay movie, you expect to leave the theater wanting to blow shit up and kick someone's ass. Stop going into M. Night movies with the wrong expectation, and you might find that they don't suck as bad as you keep telling yourself they do.

The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and The Village are all good films. The Village kind of grows on me; I didn't like it at first until I realized I was looking at it the wrong way. Signs pretty much sucked, I'll admit. I like how at the end of The Village you are told the monsters are farce, but then the scene in the woods happens and you aren't so sure anymore. I thought that was a really cool retwist/climax.

In closing, you should know by now what to expect from an M. Night movie, and that is being presented with a situation involving something without a clear explanation, multiple scenarios that could be the answer, and then a resolution at the end. Barring Signs, he has always had A-list talent in his films, and they have never sucked. The dialogue he writes is pretty good, he just needs to stop fapping over himself and the reviews from The Sixth Sense as someone mentioned earlier and get some consultation on his plot development and execution.

What a terrible fucking argument. It's correct, but it's fucking terrible. The interaction between the subject and object is always different. The movie itself is an object, it isn't entertaining or boring in and of itself, the interaction that YOU make with it is what makes it boring. If it was a silly/stupid/terrible movie, then every subject (read person) that interacts (watches the film) will think it's silly/stupid/terrible. An art object is exactly that, an art object up for interpretation that requires an interaction. It is applied to every movie, film, art, book, whatever. M. Night Shayamwhatever isn't any different. A lot of subjects (people) come out with a shitty interaction with the object (his films).

In conclusion, Madame Bovary isn't a boring novel, you make it boring. No shit! What a brilliant insightful statement you have there!

Edit: I really sound like a pompous asshole there. Sorry for that. It's just the argument is so generic. It's correct, but it's correct for everything that everyone dislikes. Eg, the book isn't boring, you make it boring, the movie isn't bad, you make it bad...it's always about interactions. What you said is obvious, what others are trying to say is why the interaction between subject and object is a bad one, and you are basically saying "change yourself and it'll be good". It would be the equivalent of me saying "Star trek is a terrible show, and you telling me to turn myself into a tekkie, and look at it through that pair of glasses". Sure, that would work, but...do you see the problem here?

Wow, you really hate M Night Shumanumaman, but even so Night is nowhere near as bad as Uwel, it's not even a contest. Still wonder why you're so fixated on him over Boll.

I've only seen one boll movie ever, don't really hate him more (or less), but I knew boll is the most hated director easily, so I wanted to pair him up next to him to make the poll a bit more polarizing.

    Re: Most inept movie director...

I think one interesting thing about M. Night is that you as the viewer expect the twist, you know that something is up, in a kind of special way BUT you also know that the characters have no idea about it, so you kind of get a unique view of them and their choices. Guy can definitely create an atmosphere and weave a tale, however contrived it might get.

Putting him in a category with Boll or even Ratner is kinda petty.

Night is polarizing, people seem to love him or hate him, whereas the other two isn't so much polarizing as much as pure disgust. Lucas is polarizing, as well as the cohen brothers. It's been suggested that they belong here, so I guess it depends on what side of the fence you fall on...

With Shayamalan, the Cohens, and Lucas, there's pretty much universal acceptance of some degree of talent or auteurship.

Boll and Ratner? Not so much.

Since I have no interest in any of the movies he makes, I decided to check out the spoiler.

And well, wow. In kind of the same way that Norbit supposedly got Eddie Murphy snubbed by the Oscars for his work on Dreamgirls, I don't see how anyone could take Shyamalan remotely seriously or even pretend like he has a shred of a clue with what he's doing after reading the plot details of that movie. What passes for plot twists in his movies are shit a 12 year old would think up huffing paint, but he's been living off the success of actually having a really good plot twist (Sixth Sense) in one of his movies that for some reason people keep thinking that his ideas are actually good.
