Fun with Sandworms

I teleported into rolanberry fields [s] today to do some meriting in campaign, when to my suprise the sandworm is there! There was a sizeable group around it just ooh and aaah ing at it. When, all of a sudden, it starts going on a rampage. First, there was 5 or 6 people afk behind the galka npc that you get tags from. It ate all them, then it went around and started munching on anyone dumb enough to get into range. Eventually it settled on top of the tags NPC, and person after person ran up trying to get tags, sandworm not loading on their screen, and one by one it ate them all.

Now i gotta admit, by this point i was laughing my ass off. People were running up to it and dying like lemmings. One guy goes "oh it doesnt aggro, watch!" 2 seconds later? Chomp! A few people tried to be heroes and drag it away from the campaign tower, but the sandworm would not be won. It just ate them then scurried right back to the tower.

One time though, as a person was running from it, the NPC's started attacking the sandworm! They got it to 65% before the battle ended and they warped out.

I must have stayed for a good 2 hours just laughing my ass off at people feeding themselves to this worm. Anything like this happen to anyone else?

Edit: I eventually did the chivalrous thing and kited it away from the fort. I noticed while doing this, that the sandworm is easily solo'd by someone with enhanced movement speed. as DRK/BLU with crimson legs on, i was able to bio2 kite it for over 30 minutes without it touching me once. It has the attention span of an 5 year old with A.D.D. Every few seconds it would stop chasing me and just stand there. Once it actually has a loot pool it might be worth soloing, though it would take hours.

Do you lose xp when it kicks your ass? If so, I feel sorry for those people going to get tags.

how much HP did you cleave off before you stopped? i'd love to figure just how long it would take to do that from start to finish and then go try it on a day when i'm painfully bored.

Yeah you lose exp just like anywhere else if it kills you, the only exception is if you have tags on you wont lose xp.

I tossed Bio 2 on it 3 times, and it only took it to 98%. Now, I don't know if a DRK's bio is weaker than a true mages' or not, so your experience may differ. If you were to nuke from max range you can easily run away if you have anything with +movement speed. It moves very slow and has no draw in effect.

Anyone who couldn't run from that thing is a fucking moron, it's slow as fuck and paths horribly. Doesn't even hit hard. It does have a fuck ton of HP though.

Yeah it's pathing is very weird. It likes to take twists and turns for no reason at all. That with the lack of a lootpool make it one weird ass HNM.

Oh good, so other people noticed that if it AoE's an NPC and you lose Claim (had a pickup group that was beating it up, got it to 80%, couple people went to change jobs to something more suitable, it went yellow while kited) then the worm is TOAST.

Everything was going good, then as we get back to peel it off the kiter, we notice its at 50% and falling fast, then the lag reveals the FUCKING SECOND LEGION destroying it...

Someone asked what happened, and well, my friend put it as succintly as one can.

"The galkas are pissed."

Couple hours of humor from it munching on people, several deaths on our part getting it to 80% with a ragtag group of 9 or 10 people, and then the NPC's decide they're sick of it and destroy it in 3 minutes.

Lost about 4k exp the night my campaign group aggro'd this big fella. o_o I decided not to get tags, I forget why, but it was an epic fight. Hell, I got hate off the NIN after a fresh voke with a single Bio II (on lolDRK at the time).. which lead to me getting smacked to the ground in about 4 hits.
