Taking a camera to a Broadway Show

Anyone know if they frisk you if you have a camera on yourself while going to a Broadway play. Or make you empty your pockets. Going to have a camera on me when I go to Gershwins Theatre, since i'll be sightseeing in NYC and wont have a place to drop it off before the play. Anyone have any experience with this?

They check your purse in many theaters now, especially the Gershwin since Wicked is super popular. As long as you do not try to take pics of anything (even the curtain is copyrighted fyi), you'll be fine. If you wanted to tape anything, I'd say forget about it and just enjoy the show. You can find a ton of pirated versions of the show on the net already. It's not worth getting caught (and the ushers really do at that theater).

The GF and I went to see Rent a few months back and she taped it. I had never been so nervous seeing a show. I made her vow never to do it again lol

They do at Trans Siberian Orchestra. I saw someone arrested for videotaping the show. Under the current laws governed they can take your camera and destroy the tape, or just arrest you / boot your ass out of the theater.

Re: Taking a camera to a Broadway Show

I know taking film is a no no type deal. But I dont plan to take pictures or video tape anything, i'm just going to have the camera on me for sightseeing and since I live 5hrs away from NYC I cant really drop it off home before the show, so it's going to be on my person.

My question is, if they see it on you, will they take it? Not if they see you taking pictures of the show. Just seeing the camera in a purse or pocket, is that going to get me in trouble?

If you cant stow the camera away you wont be able to enter the show, and you won't be entitled to a refund. However, if you have a light jacket with an inner coat pocket, you can stow it in there if its small enough without them noticing if they don't frisk you. So, long story short, make time to put the camera back in the car if you have one with you, or find a locker somewhere and rent it out.

That;s pretty much it. If they find it, they will most likely tell you to shut it off and then during the performance and the seating, they may take it away from you and not give it back until the end of the show. Most BWay shows have tons of warnings about photography (as well they should because it is VERY distracting).

    Hope that helps!
