You sir, are going to Hell.
Hell doesn't exist, even if you believe heaven does.

Though I'm truly sorry if I'm not some pussy-whipped jerk-off who has to "Protect my woman" from HARSH LANGUAGE of all things. Do you guys even realize what you're saying? FFS, Grow up, act mature. In the real world there's consequences for doing stupid shit.

Though it's not the same scenario as OP, if my significant other was really upset that I wouldn't go beat up someone who yelled at her. Yes, I'd rather beat her. Assuming I'd hit anyone at all(which I wouldn't). Placing that kind of burden on you is a much more sinister act than whatever the other guy was doing. If you'd really consider, or even go and beat that guy up then you need to grow some balls, cause "real men" have class.

Far classier to punch the guy than to beat your wife, in my opinion.

Re: Opinions needed: House previous owner situation

LOL, I went to bed after my last post and woke up to this. Sometimes derails are a thing of beauty.

You know, I probably wouldn't punch the guy unless he actually laid a hand on her or called her a whore or something. I was fired up last night and feeling protective over my wife. I think it's normal to feel protective over someone or something you love. I don't know why I'm being called out on this.

Also, about the garbage, it's more of an annoyance than anything. The guy signed a contract to leave the house in good condition. I don't think leaving a bunch of your stuff when vacating a house out of pure laziness is doing so, so I guess this is where the opinions will differ.

Remember, this was a rental agreement. He put down a deposit to rent from us, which means he was aware that he would have to fork over some money if we deemed the conditions unacceptable. If I had left a bunch of garbage in an apartment I'm pretty sure the landlord would take some out of my deposit for the extra work he had to do to turn it over for the next resident.

In the end, I don't think arguing with this guy is going to be worth the hassle. We've dealt with him before on monetary issues and the guy seems like a cheapskate.

Who is tossing insults around now? You're basically a failure in this thread.

Your ex really fucked you over didn't she? What did she do? Fuck your brother or something?

We get it, you are too much of a pussy to fight a man so you'll hit your wife instead. I'm absolutely shocked your marriage failed.

"Real men", when given the choice, beat their wives over someone verbally assaulting their wives? K.

And dont give me that "which I wouldn't" shit. Of course this is all hypothetical, you really think the OP is going to punch a 70+ year old dude?
I mean it's not like he threw a bible out the window and got chased down by the old fart.

What the fuck are you even talking about? Women cannot relay events without emotional outbursts? He didn't say anything to imply that his wife was even upset by the incident. The only information we got is that she told him, "Hey that guy yelled at me." Shit, if it were me telling my husband some old man screamed at me about old man shit, I'd probably be laughing as I told the story. Old people are funny like that. You're the one who's assuming she pulled some crazy hysterical woman routine, which is the first truly sexist remark made in the thread.

Further, did he actually beat that guy up at any point? No, but he felt anger in response to unwarranted disrespect on top of the inconsiderate behavior. Anger is pretty natural, and he didn't act on it. So what's your point? Thinking about doing something is just as bad as doing it? I smell a Catholic in the thread.

I think at this point we're reaching to try and maintain what dignity we have over a thoughtless comment that we don't even particularly believe, if we gave it some actual thought.

"No, I really did mean what I said! I'd beat my wife for being upset about something, but not some old guy just because he yelled at her! I really meant that!"

Oh, the internet. Don't say a word unless you want it analyzed, and don't support a comment not well enough thought out in an effort to save face.

Not to mention, that kind of mentality screams "HAY GAIZ IM A GIANT FUCK'N PUSSY". Cause everyone knows its easier to beat up your wife as opposed to a grown muthafuckin' man, amirite oll?

This is a really interesting comment, and two things stand out to me. The first, is he calls it a thoughtless comment...obviously completely oblivious to Darus being linguistics professor. See the irony in saying that someone who teaches the arts of speaking is speaking thoughtlessly? It's likely quite the contrary

The second interesting comment is that all this stems from the OP making a thoughtless comment, and Darus jumping all over it. Yet you defend the "thoughtless comments" of the linguistics professor instead of aiming your argument to defend the thoughtless comments of the OP, where it should have been.

The derail is stupid. The original question is pretty legit. Some questions: Did you have clear terms and conditions about what you considered an "acceptable" condition for the house to be in when they vacated? Did you get pictures of any/all the garbage they left behind? How far from your place did you have to haul the garbage?

If your case is well-documented, I would personally try to take a percentage of their deposit. That seems only fair if they violated clear terms. If there were looser terms that were allowed more leeway, but you still feel they took a little too much liberty in the interpretation and you documented the excess garbage, I would still pursue it. If there were no terms and you have no pictures, I would just drop it. It's not worth the hassle, and the dude will probably argue that what he left was reasonable. I'm sure he wouldn't admit to lawyers/mediators/small claims court that he left a bunch of junk to be a dick.

Basically what I was saying was, it was pretty obvious that the comment was going to illicite a lot of negative response from the community, just because of the controversy and misconceptions something like that was going to lead to. At that point, it's probably best to realize that the situation in which you would take these actions doesn't play into the particular notion of the actual circumstance that are at play and that in all probability in more than one instance you are not even going to follow through on what was said, but that the general emotional reaction of the community is going to see your comment as thoughtless....which is a correct assumption, because it does not spread across all possibilities. Which is not to say that a women doesn't need a slap when slapping is due.

But most of all I just think it's funny how the internet community tears people apart at any given chance, then those people in turn are torn apart. I don't know the guy, it was a general observation.

    And this thread was entertaining.

A few days ago we got the keys and went through the place. To make a long story short, the place had a lot of stuff left in there. I know this is a common thing to expect when buying a house as I've done my fair share of helping friends move into their homes, but the amount of stuff this guy left I felt was exceptional in my opinion.

I've compiled a list of things to present to my attorney:

    1. Drawers full of crap like combs, brushes, makeup, dental floss, and nail clippers.
    2. Panes of glass to who knows what left in the garage
    3. Bath mats and throw rugs all throughout the house
    4. Random junk in the garage: hatchets, rusted tools, a bucket of rusted chains, some sort of grilling device for ears of corn, hockey sticks, a basketball, dirty mops and brooms
    5. A computer chair, quite crappy
    6. A large fake tree
    7. 2 pairs of crutches
    8. Glasses and bottles
    9. Dirty washcloths in the tub and in sinks
    10. Shampoo bottles
    11. A giant table mounted metal saw (I have no use for this)
    12. A few plastic kids toys
    13. Dead hanging plant
    14. A box containing a belt, shoes, and a throw pillow
    15. Lots of hangers in the closets
    16. Snow brush
    17. Random cans of grease and wax in the garage
    18. Lots of scrap wood
    19. Lots of metal and plastic pipes
    20. Various wires
    21. A giant mirror in the basement
    22. Another mirror/medicine cabinet in the garage
    23. And last but not least, a fucking rotted and moldy kaiser roll in a kitchen drawer

There's more random shit that I don't know what it is as well.

You get the point. My wife and I feel we spent an unnecessary amount of time hauling this guy's fucking garbage to the dump so we can start work on our house.

I consider the amount of stuff this guy left to be equal to damages, and therefore I want some of that $750 deposit. He can't get that money until my wife and I sign off on a release form.

So what do you think? Am I blowing this out of proportion? If not, how much of this deposit do you think I should be entitled to?
You are blowing it out of proportion I have been looking to buy a house for a while now and looking at houses and have been there when my father purchased 2 other houses and helped him clean up leftover crap also helped my best friend clean up the house he bought. Unless the house is brand new and being bought from a housing development you will never find a house that is clean when you buy it. The stuff that is bold is the stuff I have personally seen many times, especially the building materials/stuff in the garage that stuff is almost always found somewhere in a house when you buy it.

Edit: I just realized you rented the house to him after you purchased it which does change the story a bit. Just use the security deposit he gave you to clean up the house. It is more work for you but you should not have to pay for it.

I have witnesses to the amount of stuff left behind, especially my realtor. She came with me for a final inspection of the property. I also took a couple of pictures yesterday before I made this thread.

I just wanted some opinions on whether I should go after a few bucks or if I was blowing it out of proportion. I appreciate the non-derail responses. I'm still undecided with what to do, but I am leaning towards me blowing this out of proportion, however, considering this guy had ample time to move out his junk it was something that probably should have been done. Honestly, it just looks like the guy rushed the whole move-out process.
